My First Enfield No4 Mk2

Hi Guys,

Well, as some of you know, I'm into Winchesters myself, but came across this beautiful Enfield in a deal, so had to pick it up. It is probably a 98-99% gun. I'm not familiar at all with milsurps, so thought I'd post some pics on there for some input. Curious about value and the target sight. I've already had some good input from another member, but thought I'd share the pics.
The gun is marked No4Mk2 UF 55 A 2550 on the right of the receiver. A2550 also stamped on mag. So, guess it's a 1955 gun. England stamped on right side of receiver. The wood is very nice and has some really nice grain. It also has a Parker Hale PH5C. I've been told this sight would not be original to the gun, but could it be? The original owner bought it in the 50s, and stopped collecting around 1960 when he started having kids. He was not a shooter, only collector, and it came to him with this sight...so curious. The bore is absolutely mint. It does not look like it has ever been fired, though the mag does show very little wear where it may have been. It has this brown leather cover covering the brass buttplate. I took it off to take a look, and some of the rubber inside of the case stuck to the brass, and will need to be cleaned off, but it is a gorgeous gun. From what I've been told, there are even nicer ones to be found, some still wrapped. Anyway, curious to value, origin (FAZ, BSA?), could sight be original or added?

Very nice piece!
Do you intend to shoot it?
If so, take advantage of the magazine swivel in sling mounting, it permits a very good shooting sling support.
And BTW, you have your sling reversed, hooks should point to the outside of the sling, not against the wood.

That one should be a great shooter with that PH5C sight on it. And you asked about the manufacture? It would be Faz,I think their common marks are "(F)" and in your case "UF". Sight would not be original military, but is correct for a target rifle from what I know. From what I seen, the value of a rifle like that would be around $500-$700 I would think.
 
Thanks for the info so far guys. One: I had no idea the sling was reversed, as that's the way it came to me...that will be changed tonight! Two: I didn't know the UF designated Faz. Learning lots so far. As for shooting it? My original intention was/is to sell it after determining a fair price, but I'm being more and more tempted to take her out and see how she shoots. I have an idea it may shoot real well with that target sight. I shoot all my Winchesters, but haven't owned a milsurp since the mint Swedish M38 Mauser my dad bought me when they first came into our market. That was a fine gun. Kicking myself for having sold that one.

P.S. I actually was wondering why these guns had 3 swivels!!
 
I've got a Longbranch No.4 MK1* with exactly the same sight. The upper hand guard is also slightly lighter in colour than the rest of the stock, like yours. I'm pretty sure the PH sight was added later for competition shooting. Don't know whether the hand guard was a later repair/modification or if they just didn't care that much about matching pieces at the factory.

I've also seen a FAZ No.4 with that PH sight and the grooved hand guard. In that case the gun had definitely been modified for competition shooting. I suspect the work was done while the rifle was still in military service, but whether it actually came out of the ordnance factory like that or was modified by an armorer I don't know. I suspect the latter.

The standard No.4 has only two swivels. The one on the rear barrel band (middle of fore stock) and one on the butt. The middle one in front of the mag is a target add on so a sling can be used as a shooting aid more easily. I have been told that the target rifles were not to be modified in any permanent way so the rife could be returned to Military spec if needed. It makes sense since the world was in a shaky peace and it seemed WWIII was around the corner.
 
It was built by Royal Ordnance Factory Fazackerly. They were the only ones making the No.4Mk2 in 1955. (I think they were the only factory that made the Mk.2 at all, until their machinery was sold to Pakistan and Pakistan Ordnance Factory continued making them.)

Thanks for all the great input fellas. Very much appreciated. After some long thinking today, I have decided to part with a few more guns to save more money for my house downpayment. I'm looking at selling 2 or 3 more guns. That said, I think I'll have to let this one go, given I'm more into the Winchesters. Shame I didn't get to shoot it, b/c it is a beauty and I bet it's a tack driver, but I'm sure someone on here will get some enjoyment out of it!!
