Well, I finally got my first full wood enfield! The previous owner said the gun was probably a sporterized that had been turned back into a full wood, but I think it is quite nice. The gun does have the FTR initials, so it has been overhauled; the bolt, receiver and mag #'s all match (serial # starts with a V). The bore seems quite shiney, and the rifling looks strong. I'm a little stumped at some of the writing (or lack of) I should say. The wrist only has the serial number and 1942 on the left hand side, and the right hand side has nothing except for a few little proof marks or stamps that I can't make out (they are very small). The top of the barrel says ENGLAND, and the side of the receiver has some more writing, but it must have been electropenciled, as it is very hard to read. To make matters worse, there is green paint over this area as well, so I can't really make it out. I think it says No4MK1/2 and under that, it looks like P55 FTR. The muzzle end of the barrel says 303 " 2.22", and under that it says 18.5 tons. The front band has the letters VNS on it. The forestock has P 61 with an oval with a V on top, and the forend has a P with a 63. The previous owner said this was a Maltby, but I do not know how you figure that out. As well, how do you determine how many grooves the barrel has?

Nice it started life as a No4mk1 and was FTR,d to a Mk2 hence the mk1/2.The green paint indicates that it spent time in a tropical climate such as Malaya. The wood is Circasian Walnut made in Pakistan in 1963.So it probably was a sporter rebuilt recently. If its not the obvious 2 groove it will have 5.Check to see if the Barrel says Surrey on its top under the wood.Check the wrist for a stylized M which means its a Maltby. The Mk2 trigger is a nicer set up.Hows the bore? Most people clean off the green paint,I dont.To me its a bit of history.Dave.

I bought this rifle as a sporter and got the wood set from the internet and restored it,glad to see its making the rounds. Cheers and enjoy your rifle.

Glad you got a really nice one ThePun.! And the green paint adds character to a Lee Enfield. Kewl!

.303carbine, nice job indeed... :)

It's a restored sporter. Someone put Pakistani POF wood from the 1960's on it. Should be unissued circasian walnut, but it's not original.
