So a buddy of mine from college goes back home to Manitoba near Brandon ever year to hunt mid November with his family.
For years during school he and I would talk guns, military, how much we hate the Liberals, and hunting.
I've been telling him for years I wanted to try out hunting - but never had the chance... until now.
Some other friends gave me a gift certificates with West Jet, and my wife's taking a trip with some of her friends to a wedding in Mexico (too rich for both our bloods), so I'm going hunting!
I'm planning to take the Hunters course with AHEIA (evidently a prereq) and have budgeted a few hundred dollars for hunting gear (a trip to Princess Auto and Bass Pro). I think I just need to put together a decent day pack, hydration system, and pick up some extra winter clothes (I own nothing in blaze orange).
I've heard mixed bag remarks about my guns - the only non-res's I have are a Ruger 10/22, Norinco M305, Norinco HP9, and DA Backpacker. I think the M305 and Backpacker will be my tools of choice (the Backpacker more to have, than to hunt with, I just feel more comfortable having a short barreled 12 gauge non-restricted shotgun anywhere I go). We're just going for deer, and my friend told me a .308 would work fine.
My friend told me to make sure I have a decent knife, so I'll probably bring my USMC KABAR I used as my field knife when I was in the army, and my KABAR cutlass machete that was my survival knife in the field.
I'm quite anxious about the whole experience, but very excited as well. I hope to learn a lot and also practice some of the fieldcraft skills I've let go rusty since I quit the Reserves.
Anyone with any thoughts/remarks?
