my first m305 some questions???

hey guys just picked up a new 22" norc m305!
just wondering if there were any known issues with the 2012 batch?
im considering an archangel stock due to the attractive price! any other options in the 300-400 price range?
took her out this weekend! what a fun rifle!!
like ive read the rear sites are pretty crappy to say the least but im planning on scoping it so im not too concerned!
what would you guys run for an all around fun plinking scope?
also does anyone know of a gunsmith in the vancouver area the is versed in the m14/305?

P.S. i think i bought the devils rifle!!!! serial number is 20120666 :evil:

Welcome to the forum and the M14 addiction.

Make sure you read the stickies at the top of the Main Battle Rifle section. You can go mild or wild. Personally, I'd try to get it to an M14 clinic then upgrade the spring guide and spring and mount a scope on it. I'm not really into the aftermarket stocks but a nice Boyd's walnut or a USGI fiberglass is good to go in my books.

If you really want accuracy I say get a reloading setup. Then you can shoot better and more.
 
my 2, 2012 batch rifles had head space issues... one exploded in my face.
Bad rear sites that will not hold zero
bad indexing on both
the Gas system on the second one keeps coming lose no matter how much i shim it.
Sear failure (second one) with double fring and run away firing

Check your head space every 100 rounds or so. both of mine were dangerously over spec by 200 rounds.
 
haha bad rear sights is right!! haha how can it hold zero if after ever round its in a different position! haha so bad!!
index was checked by a friend with some experiance with them
im a newbie how do i check head space??

either with a set of go/no go/field gauges, or with a MIC on a spent casing. or both

the gauges are about $50 from brownells for the go/no go, the field is seperate and is the absolute max allowed for the chamber leangth. a persision mic from RCBS is $70.... but get this... needs to be checked against a go or no go gauge to make sure the "zero" is true.

within 200 rounds my chamber went from unable to chamber a no go (good)... to 8 thosands past a field gauge (thats 12 thosands of an inch over no go)
 
Did you have to buy a domestic made bolt?

i have a friend whos an air brush artist! i was thinking about having him paint a devil on the stock right below the serial numbers with a pointed tail pointing at the 666 which i am going to do in red like you said! haha

now are you talking about a .308 go/no go gauges or 7.62?
from what im reading the 308 gauges are pretty much useless because of the 762's slightly longer chamber??
i do plan on running 762 surplus through it for the most part
 
.308 since the new norcs are stamped .308 not 7.62

7.62 nato is only slightly longer what 6 thousands for field? Regardless my gun is 8 thou past .308 field (which it is stamped and came with the correct head space for) and is there for 2 thou over 7.62 field after a few hundred rounds and my first one was clearly over since it exploded and the cases when i examined them had shoulders that looked like balloons near the end and full on cracks at the case head.


My norcs head space is 1.631 and it eats .308 and 7.62 NATO like the cookie monster eats cookies

thats just over a "go" gauge for for 7.62 and under a field gauge for .308 (but slightly past "no go") so yes it is safe to fire both.
 
ive got a few hundred through mine now and inspected many of the cases! all look uniform and fine! i will be buying some gauges and keep an eye on it!

They guy I bought mine from had 2 shorty!
My friend who has some m305 experiance too one look at them and said do not buy either of the shortys due to like you said indexing was way off!
 
Redneck headspace test ... Shoot five rounds into the dirt from the hip with your face turned the other way , check the fired cases for over pressure warning signs , if they look normal ur good to go.

Get yourself to a Hungry M14 Clinic - you'll learn loads from one of the 'Masters' and yer d*ck won't fall off. Read the stickies, lube it properly and go shoot it!
