My First Moose

The rope to pull that boat full of moose was 300 feet long. The moose was 380 feet from the edge of the floating muskeg. We dragged 1/6 at a time to the little boat. Then the head came last. Then we used two 10 hp Honda outboards to tow that boat full out off the floating muskeg.
I'd do it all again cause it's been a couple of days since I did it last. Short memory. Nothing but wild meat in my freezer.

Skinning/quartering/full or partial deboning and backpack really isn't that tough of work. In my experience it's easier than pulling/pushing/etc. In some cases it's less work than slashing a trail for the quad to get to a dead animal. At any rate, congrats on your hunt.

Starting in the very early 60's myself and my family lived on moosemeat. I have shot a trainload of the big cervids, and I'm here to
tell anyone that dragging a moose out of a swamp is not my idea of a fun day. If they didn't taste so darn good, it would not be
worth the effort. In recent years, I have passed up several moose because of the obvious trouble involved in retrieving them.
Congratulations on a successful hunt though. You have a lot of fine dining there. D.

congradulations on well deserved moose .short term memory gets longer the older you get.first moose i shot was 50 yards off the road in a swamp.when buddies showed up they asked where tge moose was when i shot it.my first hunt i thought it would drop on the spot and was nervous cause it ran off :thought i missed .after 10 min buddy and i come to the road and the dammmm thing was dead in the middle of the road.after gutting we used 2 planks to pull it in a pic up.along comes a game warden and it took an hour to convince him it was shot in the swamp and not in the middle of the road out of the truck.he was looking for shells near the road. i finally walked him to where i shot it from and we found the shells...after that day i always pick up my shells.

My firs moose was a huge cow. Shot was a little under 100 yards. Center punched the heart 1 shot kill. Walked about 7 or 8 steps and dropped maybe 30-40 feet from the road on opening morning. My dad and I tried so hard to get her field dressed and loaded (whole) in the trailer so we could have it hanging back at camp before the rest of the boys got back for lunch. We were maybe 10 minutes away from pulling it off. That one would have been priceless.

The 2nd one was a different story... that guy made us earn every steak. It was half a days work I'll never forget.

Every moose hunt is an adventure and as much work as they are to move once you kill em it's totally worth every single drop of sweat.

Thanks.
After all the work the tenderloins were awesome. It smells very mild. +2 degrees this morning and time to butcher the last 3/4's.
Yes the camaraderie and adventure of the hunt are what it is all about. The meat in the freezer is second. Still 2 tags to fill if we can drag our tired butts out in the bush again. Remember I'm the youngest at 57.

If you are grinding any burger try mixing 1/4 -1/3 bacon with the moose instead of just ground pork .Harold

Congrats on the moose. I've been pretty luck with mine so far. I've shot two in the middle of a field where you could back the truck right up to them. Haven't killed one in the bush yet, not for lack of trying mind you.

It's always a good day when front end loader/logger appears just as you are about to load it.Other time I've carried moose till I puked on the trail back when I was 20..........Harold
