So I've been putting in for a moose draw for 8 years now, but have been 999'ing it the whole time because i didn't know where I wanted to go. This year my brother said I should put in for 200 and he would partner with me. Then he got a different job, and I lost my hunting buddy.

So a few weeks ago Dad called me up and said he'd go just for fun. and off we went.

I had a few leads on land owners from a local guy who has relatives in the area, but he never gt back to me so we decided to just knock on some doors and see what happened.

We talked to a few guys, and saw a lot of oil access roads. we decided to drive down one access and while we did a truck came up behind us so we stopped to talk to them.
There were two women. A rancher, and her mom. They said they had seen some the day before a few miles east, but they could be anywhere.
We backed up to turn around, and they pulled ahead about 30 yards to a break in the bush. As we were on the way out their truck was all of a sudden right on our bumper. They had seen 2 cows when they turned around and wanted to let us know just in case.

We turned around and sure enough there was a cow and a yearling calf standing about 150 yards off the trail in a wide opening. we were just about to leave and go scout around down wind when I saw a bit of motion out of the corner of my eye. There in the bush about a hundred yards away was a small bull.
dad backed up to give me some cover from a small hill and i got out and ran to get behind and above him for a clear shot. He must have figured it out and was already going up the other side of the little draw in the bush.
I got one quick shot off and he kept going (missed) another, and he stumbled but kept going into some heavier bush. H was getting farther away, and was going up a hill and so i knew I only had one chance left and had to make it count. As he came into a small clearing just below the top of he ridge I shot and heard that "smack" that hunters know so well.
It took me about 10 minutes to get to him through the thick bush but he had actually gone to a place that made it easier to get him to the truck.

When we did finally have him out in the clear, those two ladies were waiting to see what we got.
After a few minutes of chit chat, and many thanks for the tip and permission to hunt we were on our way home.

I'm glad i got to have this hunt with my dad. Not sure how many of trips like this he'll be up for.

He's not super huge, 34 inches tip to tip, but he should taste great. 418 Lbs on the hook when we dropped him off at the butcher shop skinned and quartered.

Here's a few pics. Dad has a few more on his camera I'll add once he uploads them.

This is how i found him.

Oh. I forgot to mention I was using an old Winchester model 70 of about 1941 vintage in .300 H&H magnum. Shooting Hornady 165 grain BSTP interlocks at about 3000 fsp.

Thanks guys!
Yeah I didnt wan a really big moose. After they get past about 5 years old the just dont taste as good.

I inherited that rifle about 15 years ago and havent really used it much. Ive shot a whitetail, and now this moose with it so far.
It has abot 95% of the blueing left and I dont think you can buy an action that feed smoother...

Im going to put pics of it and the weatherby i got at the same time in that "Fany rifles" thread in the picture gallery when I get time to take some nice ones.
