I just got my first non black/tactical shotgun in the mail today...a Remington 870 Wingmaster I bought for a steal on the EE. The shotgun is MINT...its an older style Wingmaster...28" barrel, FULL choke, 2 3/4" shells ONLY. LOVE this thing!!! :):):)

A few questions...

- Can I shoot steel shot outta it?
- I assume all LEAD buckshot is okay?
- Slugs...bad idea?...espically with a FULL choke?

Lead (shot and slugs) fine.

Steel is a no no because of the full choke. You can buy am express barrel with screw chokes, and it will fit it fine. You just need to replace the mag cap as well as its a little different. Or just have the barrel threaded (or opened up) and knock yourself shooting lead or steel with a more open choke.

Wingmasters are the Kings of pump guns, enjoy it.
 
Definitely a sweet looking Wingmaster!

I'd recommend a new barrel if you plan on using it with steel, as its probably around the same price and you won't need to modify the (apparently MINT) original. Keep the original barrel for trap, upland, turkey, whatever. A very capable, good quality, versatile gun.

Just a comment. I have not been able to have rem chokes fitted into any of my old 870 wingmasters. They tell me not enough barrel material to fit them.I have four vintage barrels done but all with either Colonial or Briley thin wall chokes.If you have a contact that can do rem chokes please send me a PM. Three different gunsmiths have done my barrels including two done in the US by Briley?? I asked each for rem chokes and pretty much got the same answer. Two 870 's were 12ga, one 16ga and one 28ga.
Rem chokes I can get for under 20.00 , thin walls are 45.00 plus that is why I would prefer rem chokes.take care
 
CR call remington customer service I did when I was lookking at these old full choked guns a few years ago thats what the rep told me.
3macs I didn't realize there wouldn't be enough metal left with the rem chokes. I was about to take the ithaca I've had in the back of my safe in for that surgery and was hoping that I'd be able to run my remchokes in it thanks for the heads up maybe I'll just get her cut back and run her cylinder choked after all for opening day ducks over the decoys and partridge in the thickets thats all ya really need.

Hi: Just sharing what I was told. Not sure on the ithaca, never had one of those done. I know there is quite a difference in outside diameter between say a 12ga full choke rem choke and a full choke thin wall so I never questioned them further.It is less than 50.00 to have the original fixed choke honed out maybe even cheaper in NB.
They pattern terrible with steel and the original full choke, that I know for sure, tired it a few times.Mod as a min I find. take care
 
I got an older 870 wingmaster special field from my brother a couple of years ago. It has the 3" magnum receiver. Anyhow, he had it threaded for chokes a number of years ago. Now I can't say for certain what they are but I am holding 2 containers right now that say Remington, First in The Field on the lid and on the side it says Remington Arms Co. Inc. Ilion, N.Y. On the chokes it says Remington and the size designation. I assumed they were Rem chokes.

If you can post a pic we can tell. The rem chokes came out in 1987. In 1985 remington started playing with the screw in choke systems and some 85/86 12ga guns actually came with an impossible to find square thread thin wall Briley but marked as remington. My ducks unlimited 1100 1985 has those in it . This is what is on ther side of the special IC choke

There is also the possibility the 3" mag gun had a thicker barrel or the gun smiths I spoke to were not correct.. or the word "older" has to be nailed down better, I am talking 60's and 70's barrels for guns as the OP posted a pic of with the old wood checkering, they did change the barrel designs in the 80's. Any idea what year your gun is??
Perhaps one of the site gunsmiths will chime in to set us straight
 
That is a beutiful wingmaster. I bought one just like it when I was 15 and still own it. If you are concerned about the barrel etc, I have a 26" 2 3/4" chamber I/C wingmaster barrel (plain-no rib) collecting dust in my gun room. $50 and it is yours.

I call all the major companies a few years back and I thought that Remington was a definite no. I guess my memory is failing.....again!

If I had that barrel I'd never take it off my wingmaster, lol. My remchoke barrel has the I/C in it 90% of the time as it is.

That will be perfect for clays, grouse, and decoying ducks.
