My first precision build, MDT chassis, recommendations?

Hey guys, I'm looking to my next new experience and that looks to be a precision gun. I've done a few ARs and sporters and want to expand my knowledge. I'm looking at the MDT ACC chassis, I have a 455 in a LSS-FR which does me well and want to move up to a more long range option.

A few things to make clear:

1) I'm definitely the limiting factor in the build, I don't have the time or money to do this competitively. So know this is primarily for my own shooting. To push myself. My local range is only 100 yards but I do have a couple of friends and family members where I can get out to 500 yards. Not all that long, but the best I have at my immediately disposal. So no point in a super long setup as it would be wasted on me.

2) Top priority is precision at the range I can shoot at. Something I can shoot factory now and eventually move to my own loading setup down the road when I have more time to commit to it.

3) I'd like to be able to hunt with this, if needed: deer, possibly moose and elk. But mostly as a backup. I have a 30-30, 30-06 and 308 to hunt with as a primary, so hunting is not critical.

4) Budget, not a big issue, flexible. A couple of thousand for the gun (not including the MDT chassis or scope) I can spend more and spread the build out over a year or so. No big hurry.

So basically I'm looking for a recommendation on make, model and caliber. What would you guys suggest for a first timer with these conditions and priorities?

Did you look at the Savage 110 Elite Precision? They are available in various popular factory ammo calibers and have the MDT ACC right out of the box. For the money it's by far the most cost effective way to end up where you want to be.

I have one in .223. I started a threat on CGN with some info, you'll find it if you look through my Started Threads.

308 or 6.5 Creedmoor - both have a good selection of factory match ammo that you can find anywhere.
If you go 308, one set of reloading dies covers you for both your hunting and target rifles.

Might be your best bet.
To actually “build” a rifle, you’re looking at $3k in action, barrel, trigger and magazine. It depends on what barrel or system you choose.

I would be strongly looking at Tikka. Probably best dollar per performance rifle out there.

If you want to splurge a little bit more, then a barreled Defiance Tenacity, Bighorn Origin or Kelbly Atlas action would be other nice choices, though I'm not sure if that's within the budget. These are more "budget" custom actions.

ACC is a lovely chassis for PRS games... definitely not something I would want to pack for a hunt, so you should consider how important hunting is in the mix. There are chassis and stocks that can run dual roles better.

For pure range work, the 223 is a gem... if you want a dual purpose, I prefer the 6.5 Creedmoor over the 308 (despite over 20yrs shooting the 308win)

Actions to consider - Wby Vanguard/Howa, Tikka T3, Rem 700, Rem 783. Sorry, although a huge Savage fan, for a repeater, I would want another action.

Barrel - this is where you are going to make or break your project. Quality match barrel whether gunsmith or prefit offers the potential for much higher accuracy and consistency. This is where you want to spend resources if on a limited budget.

here is my rig... low cost, very high performance... could work for hunting in a pinch (I have other barrels that can be swapped in).

Lots and lots of options...

Hi Jerry is that a tikka action ?

Cans you break it down for us.

Thanks

Rem 783 action with a number of custom touches...Timney trigger.. IBI prefit match barrel with spiral fluting...honking big BRAKE.. XRS stock bedded... MPOD with ARCA rail and mounts

Burris XTR sig rings on a EGW base and Athlon Ares ETR optic.

Runs great, shoots great, costs little. Can help with parts in the build so if you want to discuss further, send a pm or email mysticprecision@gmail.com

Tikka if factory. Or, build your own. Bighorn origin or an arc nucleus with a PVA shouldered prefit, triggertech trigger, ACC and you have an amazing setup. Going custom allows caliber changes if the action accepts different bolt heads. Pass on Savage and Remington if you have a real budget

Targets inside 500m and hunting moose aren't very compatible goals for cartridge selection. 308 is a good compromise with excellent factory ammo available, but a 223 would be better for paper at those ranges while being way cheaper to shoot and having way less recoil. The weight of a target rifle in an ACC isn't very attractive for hunting either. Since you seem to have a few hunting rifles it sounds like you'd be happier just getting/building a target rifle.

Tikka CTR dropped in a chassis would be a great way to get a quality rifle at a good value... Or just go full custom, but I can't offer much advice in that budget category.

I have a tikka T3 action needing a barrel and i was thinking of a IBI prefit in carbon , can i get a recommendation on a stock or a chassis
I want to use the rifle build for Precision /PRS shooting and hunting.

cheers

Nice rig Jerry

I just picked up a Cadex Strike Nuke for a Rem 700 LA, have only had it out once but so far it seems to be quite nice, it is on a Sendero and even though it has added weight it almost has seemed to balance the feeling out better Vs the factory stock, standing free hand it does not seem to feel much heavier at all. The Strike Nuke likely added 2.5-3 pounds over factory stock( i did not weigh them) so if weight is a issue then a Bravo might be better, i think the the Bravo’s are over 2 pounds lighter.

I also have a couple Bravo’s, i like them as well but the fit and finish does look a bit cheaper and seems to have a more plastic feeling, but again lots of things i like about them as well.

I have not had a chance to handle a MDT XRS but really like the looks of them as well and would be interesting to compare them all together
