My first precision rifle .223 or .308

I also agree with Jerry. You already have a 10FP. With the money you will spend on a 5R you could buy another .308 match barrel, .223 match barrel with the twist of your choice, .223 bolt face, Bell and Carlson stock and get it bedded to your 10FP action for around the same price. Then you have the best of both worlds.
 
I hate to agree with Jerry on this, for no reason other than the fact that I LOVE the 5R. But a smart suggestion IS a smart suggestion after all... for the money of a 5R, you can definitely refine your current rifle into something special.

I'm thinking that if you have any interest at all in reloading, you would see some of your biggest improvements there, aside from proper bedding, and a match barrel wouldn't hurt.

.....I AM slightly curious about how big of difference the .408 or .418 do for wind drift @1000+, with their insane BC's. But holy hell is that ever pricy.

I've saved up enough for the Rem 5R now and just looking back at the Savage 10...

I've heard so much about the 5R and about how it holds nicely and all...

haha ShaunM, are you talking about those two new rifles from Barrett? and CheyTac?
 
Forget buying a gun. Take your saved-up cash and buy loading equipment. No gun is going to reach its full potential with factory ammo, and the difference with what you currently own could be incredible.

Once you reload, you can look at getting into a calber that combines outstanding long range accuracy, lower recoil and good barrel life.

I suspect you will cut your current groups in half with hand loads, and don't get seduced by what the 5R did. They are nice guns, but some shoot well, some don't - just like ALL factory rifles.
