Hey Guys, looking to buy my first precision rifle and so far my only criteria is I want it in a .308 (almost forgot, price range $5000 max.) So far the Sako TRG22 in black has peaked my interest as well as a rifle I saw on the Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply web site (custom AICS M40 .308 win.) Any suggestions, opinions, or insight would be greatly appreciated as I am new to these type of rifles. Thanks.

If your total budget for everything needed (rifle, scope, rings, bipod) is 5K then the TRG22 is a good way to go. Very good accuracy and reputation, lots around so easy to get info and parts.

If you intend to spend 5K on just the rifle you probably can't do better than the PGW Coyote, made in Winnipeg and deadly accurate right out of the box.

No doubt there will be other opinions.;)

$5000. Give Ian Robertson a call. Get a Barnard action in a Robertson stock and mated to the barrel of your choice. Should have enough change for some fine glass.

how about this instead, call jerry at mystic precision, build a tackdriver on a stevens action with a primo barrel stick top of the line glass on it and kick the snot out of stock rifles because you have lots of cash to shoot and reload with top grade components. practice will make you a better shooter than gear all day long. there is no way around trigger time. enjoy your new obsession :D

If you are going to drop 5K on a rifle get something custom built. That way you get the action, stock, barrel, trigger that you want, not something off the self.

If you this is your first venture into the world of precision rifles, you may do well to start with a cheaper alternative than the Sako. My advice would be that you go with a Remington 700P. You'll get at least .75moa accuracy out of the box, usually better, and you'll have a enough money left over to put a NF or S&B on top of it. Then, once you've put thousands of rounds downrange, you can get your Sako (or an Accuracy International, my recomendation). You could also, once you've shot out the factory one, put a match barrel on your 700P and have a .25moa tack-driver if you do everything right.

Whatever you decide to do, welcome to the world of precision shooting.

I second Giving Mystic a call. Great guy to deal with and can certainly build tac drivers. I would reccomend getting your hands on as many of the stock offerings out there and see what is most comfortable to you. Then build off that

Build a M40-A1. Put in your order for a Ron Smith (RKS Barrel)gain twist barrel if you need the number I can give it to you. You won't find it on a web site he is to old for that crap. His shop is small and old and dirty and messy just like him, but the barrels that come out of that shop are up there with the best in the world. He ships his barrel all over the world for competition shooters. I have a little experience shooting. I shoot 4" groups with his barrels at 525 meters not yards with factory Hornady 168gr match ammo, thats not me thats the barrel. He is the best there is. I just ordered two more identical barrels from him.
