Did you find yourself a mule deer yet up there or are you starting to wish you had put in with K.M.? I only made him walk like 15 miles when he was down for the weekend.. The least you could do is guide him to a booner moose so he can come back down for a weekend during rifle season!

The bolt knob wasn't removable from the factory.

As far as the targets go, I have been doing a bit of load development during weekends when I have some time. I've been running into a few issues and have made some phone calls trying to find out what needs to be done to remedy the problem.

Problem: Currently my throat is cut short enough to accomodate the magazine. This means that I have my leads seated deep enough that loading beyond 70 grains of H1000, causes pressure issues. If I load the shells to an OAL beyond 3.6400" I'm unable to eject a loaded shell without pulling the bolt out. This wouldn't normally be an issue except for the fact my comb doesn't allow me to do so. So even if I go as far as to lengthen my throat and turn this into a single shot, I have to carry an allen wrench to drop the comb and allow my bolt to come out.

My biggest issue with this setup currently is that I am completely unable to utilize the case capacity of the STW. If I lengthen the throat and load longer shells this becomes a pain in the ass to use as a hunting rifle. As it sits I could have chambered it as a 7mm Rem Mag and ran into zero issues with cartridge length, or pressure with this load.

So here's my question. Should I lengthen the throat and break ~3200 fps with a 180 grain VLD and suck it up as far as not being able to eject a loaded shell? (aka dump it into the ground and eject an empty, or carry an allan wrench on my person at all times) Or should I find a different variation of 7mm. that will fit this action?

Another thing to keep in mind is that I can do some work to the bolt and allow myself enough bolt throw to eject ~3.750" OAL cartridges.


I want to be doing more of :sniper: and less of :bangHead:.......
 
Slot the top of the comb on a milling machine enough to allow you to slide the bolt out. Use the shorter bullets when you want to shoot as a repeater and the longer ones when you want to shoot at the bench.
