I called Reliable Gun on Friday as I usually do from time to time to see whats new thats in and whats available in used Rifles. They had a less than year old Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .223 with a Bushnell 3200 Elite 5-15x50 on it and to make it even better it was left handed wich is my curse. I went down there first thing Saturday morning when they opened and picked it up along with 1000 rnds of ammo. I picked up the rifle with scope for 950$. I went out with my girlfiend on the weekend just for a quick couple hours of shooting at Davis lake. She is totally hooked on target shooting ever since I took her out a month ago. I managed to put 60 rnds through it and love it.

buddy, for long range shooting, you need a good bipod and need to change to an external elevation/windage knob tactical scope, reticle should be mil-dot

He said Precision Target... not long range.... but thank you Captain Buzzkill....

Nice Rifle, I have an SPS V in .204 and .308 and I love both of them... just wait until you start customizing, two words... Money Pit...

Ok, stop everything right here, WHERE is the tactical bolt knob in this photo? You need one of these...by the way, great rifle and a great price...how much for 1k of ammo?

Congrats on the rifle, purchase and having a significant other (who looks good) being into the same things you are.

Definitely want to do some upgrades down the road next month. I was thinking of getting a carbon fibre wrapped barrel, Leupold Mark 4 optics possibly up to 24x magnification and definitely a bipod. The 1000 rnds I picked up are T&H I believe, just cheaper stuff the AR guys like to use 55grn. I paid 535 for the 1000 rnds.

As for my significant other she isn't just good looking shes HOT.vShe is really gettng into shooting. Only problems are she dosn't like rifles with lots of recoil. I let here shoot one of my 303's and she didn't like it very much. Definitely didnt like the 12ga. I think I will build her a custom rifle soon, until then she uses my Ruger 10/22 like its going out of style. Her favorite targets are eggs at 75-100 yds, because the way they explode. Her biggest problem when it comes to geting a gun that fits her is well to put it bluntly her massive canons. They are defintiely bigger than 50cal thats why she loves the 10/22.

On a seperate not for ayone thats local that sees this and shoots at Davis Lake. STOP LEAVING YOUR TRASH FROM SHOOTING UP THERE. I guy could make a killing just collecting all the brass for recycle up there.

No harm in picking up a bipod. If you go with a Harris, make sure you get one that tilts. A small bag to use under the toe of the stock helps; sock full of sand, etc. works.
Don't be in a big rush to spend a lot of money accessorizing the rifle. There are all sorts of gimmicks that gunshop commandos recommend. Don't worry about rebarrelling until you've used up the barrel that's on the rifle. Getting some quality ammunition would be a good idea; handloading is something you should look at if you are going to do any amount of precision shooting.

Your rifle is an excellent first step! 223 is an excellent choice for cartridges and not going for the $100 Chinese scope was another excellent move.

Abby and Mission both have ranges, and getting in some quality time on the bench will serve you very well. Give some thought to coming out and trying F-Class shooting at the Mission range. There are a number of excellent guys that would be absolutely thrilled to welcome you and show you the ropes. They have a 2-day event coming up the first weekend of May. You have the option of entering a hunter class or a true F-T/R Class. I guarantee you will learn more in one day of hanging out with fellow addicts there than you will in one week of BSing with guys like me on a board like this! :)

Have fun! ...oh yeah! Get one for she-who-must-be-obeyed! She'd love it too!

reticle should be mil-dot

Not necessarily - see avatar at left.

mildcustom2,

If you know for sure that you won't hunt with the thing, then .223 is a fine choice that I would have gone with because .308 Match ammo eats up money real fast!

I'd also recommend against going with the rear sand bag/sock setup until you get really good at shooting without any shooting "aids"... Just stick to the bipod and get a sling too maybe.

Sorry I havent replied but I have been stuck on an oil rig out in the Atlantic ocean for the past couple weeks. Still out here and hoping to get off here tomorow.

Can anyone suggest a really good precision target round I should pick up in .223. And roughly how much it cost.

Nice rig and better yet to have someone to share the fun with.

The best ammo you can feed your rifle is handloads customised to the needs of the rifle. If you are using factory ammo only, you will need to just try as many types as you can get your hands on.

I wonder if they will mind reloading on an oil rig?

Best improvements you can make beyond handloading is to bed the action properly and tune the trigger as light as you prefer. Will really help get the most from your rig.

Enjoy...

Jerry
