I am trying to decide which revolver to buy as my introduction to target shooting. I have heard that it is good to start with a .22 cal so I don't develop a flinch. My question is should I get the S&W 63 or should I get the 617 which is larger and heavier? I eventually plan to get a S&W 686 so I was thinking that the 617 might be a good practice gun as it is about the same weight and size as the 686. On the other hand the 63 is small and light but would have a bit more of a kick (although I doubt too much). On the third hand maybe I should skip the .22 cal and just buy a 686 right away and shoot .38 Special before moving up to .357 magnum rounds. What say you?

That is what I did, start with a 686, shoot 38spl and 38+P.. Use double action to learn how to feel the hammer fall when pull the trigger slowly. You will love it.

One of the .22's, definitely. Which one is up to you.

The benefits of the 63 are obvious. The 617 is easier to shoot well.

Thanks for your input guys. I am leaning towards starting with a .22 cal revolver for my regular shooter and a 686 for less frequent shooting. I figure that the money I save on ammo by shooting the .22 will buy me the 686 after shooting 3000 rounds. This way I get to buy two guns and can tell myself that I am actually saving money.

Save money??? not in the world of shooting. I got my 686, then suddenly I shot my friend's CZ, then I got one; then I saw the damn ugly 2245, then I bought one; then I shot that girl's Glock 17, then I bought one....You will soon know what's going to happen with you:D
God bless all shooters, work harder to buy more guns:)

Yeah, I'm just counting the days until my 686 arrives. Can't go wrong with it. I actually started a similar thread a few weeks ago, and the good people of CGN steered me towards a 686; tried it at the range and I never looked back! Shooting 38/357 Mag is such a plus!

The 617 will resemble the 686 more than the 63 which is made on the smaller J frame and is much lighter. So, if you're looking for a .22lr to start with the intention of getting a 686 down the road then I'd recommend the 617.

Tough question. First, I do not know of a M63 with a barrel length that complies with your laws. With that said, I do not care for medium (K) frame 22 revolvers as they are too heavy for the calibre. For a novice shooter the 357 Magnum may have too much recoil unless you start with 38 Specials. The real shame is that Canadians cannot easily own my favorite 22 revolver, the S&W M43:mad: Regards, Richard:)
