Hello everybody this is my first post and as the title reads I need some help.

I just finished my Non resricted course and should have my PAL by mid Feb
I need some help choosing my first rifle Im very exited to pop my cherry come feb :runaway:
What I want is somthing that is easy to shoot not to complicated and easy to maintain as well as cheap ammo and semi auto.
I will be looking to spend around 900 to 1000 with ammo shiped to my door.
Im new to firearms and have been reading a ton of threads on this site ( Great forum by the way very helpful)
I really like the Cz 858 that Wolverine has. Will they have any come mid feb.

If anyone could give me some more rifles to consider and if they will be availible that would be great.

any help is very much appreciated.
Also any used rifles I will consider as long as they are in good shape please do not try to sell me broke junk as this will be my first rifle and I plan on keeping it for life.
Oh and this is for plinking and target range days I dont plan on hunting.

Thanks in advance

Right on buddy, welcome to the club! You may wish to look at the following rifles:

Norinco M14 .308 Win also eats 7.62mm Nato, not too expensive and lots of mod options, great for hunting, targets, pretty much anything

CZ with the longer barrel is non-restricted and looks like lots of fun, if you buy milsurp ammo its pretty cheap for a crate or 2, you can also get commercial hunting ammo for 7.62 soviet as well

There's also the AR180b, a bit pricey but its 5.56mm and mag fed

SKS is also a nice option if you like 7.62mm Soviet calibre, rifles are really cheap and you can mod them to the hilt, ammo is cheap, won't break the bank at all for your first shooting iron, buy 3 of them just in case!

Remigton 7400 is a semi-auto hunting rifle which comes in various calibres, you can check that out too

Ruger mini 14, .223 rem, can also mod the crap out of it, popular rifle

Whatever you choose have fun and shoot safe, good luck with your choice, I am sure you will get lots of advice here.

x2... sounds like good advice. You could also get a rimfire rifle like a Ruger 10/22. Dirt cheap ammo and unlimited mods out there.

Thanks for the advice
What kind of SKS? and can you put bigger mags on them (for Look). Does any one know where to get one.

the "fun" guns are great to have...

but it may be an idea to get into the .22 first...for all the reasons mentioned in other posts....help you learn, uber cheap to shoot, etc.

as mentioned above, the 10/22 is a great choice, lots of mods for it too (including a 50 round drum mag)...

in the end, the first will always be good no matter what you get.

just get one and have fun..

Most SKS rifles have fixed internal mags, the only one I know of with a removable mag is the Yugo SKS, I believe it's the model D. The SKS rifles that I have seen around are mostly Chinese made, the odd lucky people I came across had Russian made ones. Lots of gun stores sell SKS rifles and they are not too pricey at all, you can also find lots of used ones. Picking up a semi auto 22 might be a good idea for your first rifle, they can be loads of fun, no recoil, and are cheap to shoot, that way you don't break the bank getting into your new hobby.

NO Yugo SKS's have detachable mags and the Remington 742/7400 series are POS Jamm-o-matics designed to fire under 20 rounds a year while hunting, not to put hundreds of rounds downrange per year. Doing so will peen out hte locking recesses in the receiver resulting in a throwaway gun.

Try to give the guy good advice fellas.

The ONLY detachable mag factory SKS is the Chinese SKS-D. The SKS is a better design when the fixed mag is retained. With 5 round mag limits, detachable mags are a JOKE. Don;t live or die on that requirement - trust me.

Only exception with respect to center-fire rifles is if you buy a gun that takes AR15 mags, then there is a 10 round mag available.

first you should go back to your instructor and kick him square in the junk. he should of told you it is mandatory to do the restricted course TOO!!.

now how are you going to buy the required AR15?

go with the russian SKS at frontier

obviously you are into cool looks factor so cz858 is perfect , cheap to operate.

wolverine got a special right now for $650 you get a black furniture set thrown in, check with them to see when the special expires or make arrangement with them till you get your PAL.

another is reg norinco SKS ($170-225) with duck-bill mag ($20-30) , the metal ones arent reliable but from my experience the short plastic ones are.

frontier is bringing in russian SKS in mid feb, just in time when you get your PAL, it starts at $229 , these are good value , they are taking names right now so should you decide on a SKS then this would be the one you should have.

lastly, SKS-D , that will run you about $300-400 and it takes AK mag.

Thanks for all the advice.
I have a few questions

How reliable are the norinco type 56 sks's and how do new stocks and bipods fit on it (loose and sloppy or tight).

Im thinking of going the sks route I can get the rifle, ammo, stock, bipods, and other little things for under $900
Has anyone used the ATI SKS T6 Adjustable Stock

But I really like the black and green look

I still say the CZ858 is the best choice. Comes with 4 mags. cleaning kit etc, best bang for your buck deal going; you will regret not getting one if and when the supply dries up. So you have a very reliable and adiquitly accurate 7.62x39. At $650 plus $200 for a case of ammo your in your ballpark. There is nothing wrong with the SKS but it is very old technology. SKS accuracy can be hit and miss. Of the four CZs I've owned, the accuracy was in the 2-3 moa range and I was confidant out to 400m. With my SKS's, well it has varied. With the CZ you have the advantage of detachable mags in a upgradeable package, and the look cool factor you want. Stay away from the Ruger Mini 14/30... You would be better off with a SKS!

Its such a hard decision I do love the look of the CZ but are the reliable? Will it last me a long time with proper cleaning.

It will at least last as long as an SKS and they are very reliable. Aftermarket parts and accessories can be had as well. You will not be dissapointed. The only other suggestion I could make is an M305/M14 but it is considerably more expensive to feed. Stick with the CZ858 over the VZ as the finish and overall appearance is better. And I beleive they are new made recievers over the surplus reciever and parts of the VZ. The advantage in the VZ is the chrome lined barrel. But I have never had an issue with my CZ corroding or any rust build up.

If you choose anything manufactured for the 7.62mmx 39mm cartridge keep in mind that that cartridge, designed in World War 2, was not designed for precision accuracy. It was designed as a short range battle cartridge. If you are happy with 3-6" groups at 100 yds your in. Don't waste money trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. They are plinkers nothing else. Nobody in the 3 gun matches that I attend annually, chooses the cartridge for any shooting past 100 yds.

Also keep in mind that the majority of 7.62mmx 39mm ammunition today is corrosive primed. If you use corrosive primed ammunition any rifle not cleaned after shooting will eventually start corroding. With the SKS, you definitely have to take the gas system apart for cleaning. Water and compressed air are your friends. Corrosive ammo is really cheap these days, non corrosive is more expensive.

If you intend on getting into any timed/speed competitions with a 7.62mmx39mm caliber rifle, charger clips (easily and suitibly modified) are easier to reload your rifle with than 5/30 "Banana" magazines. As a reliable carbine the SKS works as required, providing you do your part. I use mine in World War 2 re-enactor matches where speed/reliability and time count. If you require 20-30 rds to shoot a stage (don't forget misses) charger clips rock, plus they are cheap and can be thrown away if required.

while i agree with you thats it not designed for precision. it can do alot better than a 3-6" grouping .

Im not worried about the ammo be off a bit. My shooting skills are yet to be seen. Just hitting the target will call for a night of drinking.

Thanks again for all the positive advice. I contacted wolverine about the CZ858 and they have a good stock of them and expect to still have them in feb.

Also if anyone knows about any used rifles send me a message. I cant get access to the EE.

You have to apply for access to it, Click on the bar that says Equiptment Exchange and proceed from there.

Good choice on the Cz 858. My only gripe is shooting corrosive through semi autos. Doesn't stop me, as I'm burning my way through the crates I bought, but I always cringe a bit knowing that it could eat the rifle. For coolness - Cz, for burning up by putting 5 crates of ammo through, Sks.

Unless I missed you specifically saying you were looking for semi autos - there are a lot of cheap milsurps of great quality (the world of mosin nagants, random enfields, perhaps a mauser) that are the same or less of the price of a cheap sks. They're built like tanks too.
