My first Rifle (help please)

My first was the mini 14, it seems to be a love it or hate it rifle with people as for me I had nothing but good luck as far as durability, fairly accurate, cheap to shoot, easy to strip down to clean, and most of all looks cool. with a buget of 800-1000$ you can get a mini 14 and have some left over for a Ruger 10-22 and go back and get your restricted licence and most of all if you havnt joined CSSA, do it as well. Good luck:50cal:

My 858 can easily group under 2"@100yards. SKS's are hit and miss, but generally don't expect any better than 3" groups (and many are much, much worse!)

Get a Cz 858 or SKS, then get 1120 rounds of M43....

Give yo a really feeling of "shooting", not just sit down and pull triger..

Mini 14/30 mags are spendy and accessories are not as easy to come by, from what I have seen. As for reliability... Sure the Ruger is good... for a range gun. It was never designed to take the abuse the 858 was. CZ all the way. OK flame away!

You could get a ruger 10/22, SKS, and a case of 7.62 ammo for under a grand. Those were 2 of my first 3 rifles. It quickly becomes an addiction after that!!

Alright I have been reading and searching and this is what I came up with.

Im down to either

CZ-858 Tactical from Wolverine + 1120 rounds for close to $1000
or
A russian SKS from Frontier + ATI stock+1120 rounds + Norinco 18.5" shotgun for about the same price.

What would you do

Also how long does it take to get approved to the EE

If you are tactical shooter, then a Canada Ammo Griz 870 will be better than a 18.5" barrel shotgun. Somebody puts old wood furniture on Griz 870:

Option 3, CZ-858+1120rd+Norinco 18.5".:D

If you sart out with a SKS you'll be happy,if only cause you don't know any better,I mean its got every thing you need to get started, easy to use ,cheep enough to abuse and throw in to that a Norc HP-9.its all good.

But you're always be thinking about something better.

Hell,just get all 3.

Would have to suggest the M14s by Norinco... $450cnd with lots to spare on ammo.... It's an outstanding rifle.

That was my first civilian rifle... what a beast. I've since added a cammo synthetic stock, and bi-pod. If your stuck on where to get an M14, i know a fellow outside the regular venue's that usually has a good supply on hand. Just let me know....

Skinnadoor.

The SKS is a great starter gun, got me into the hobby. It's dirt cheap and gives you a good background on the operating characteristics of higher power locked breech gas operated guns.

Dude, get your Restricted, save some pennies get an AR, then get a 1911. Then you're good.

(that sounds sarcastic, but really that's where you'll end up in a few years anyway, well you might end up with a different pistol - but you will end up shooting an AR so in the long run you'll save money getting one sooner. Either way get your Restricted - Canada needs more shooters)

Right on buddy, welcome to the club! You may wish to look at the following rifles:

Norinco M14 .308 Win also eats 7.62mm Nato, not too expensive and lots of mod options, great for hunting, targets, pretty much anything

CZ with the longer barrel is non-restricted and looks like lots of fun, if you buy milsurp ammo its pretty cheap for a crate or 2, you can also get commercial hunting ammo for 7.62 soviet as well

There's also the AR180b, a bit pricey but its 5.56mm and mag fed

SKS is also a nice option if you like 7.62mm Soviet calibre, rifles are really cheap and you can mod them to the hilt, ammo is cheap, won't break the bank at all for your first shooting iron, buy 3 of them just in case!

Remigton 7400 is a semi-auto hunting rifle which comes in various calibres, you can check that out too

Ruger mini 14, .223 rem, can also mod the crap out of it, popular rifle

Whatever you choose have fun and shoot safe, good luck with your choice, I am sure you will get lots of advice here.

I think the best choice on that list is the AR18, cheap ammo, reliable and accurate, more so than the mini14 by quite a bit.

With any afrter market part that is designed for a platform, some times they require some love. This being said dont be afraid to spend alittle extra money off the start the ensure you are getting a quality upgrade, start cuting cornerd with guns, ammo and accessories you may find youre self unsatisfyied.

Hit this thread accidentally.

From what I've read though you haven't done a lot of shooting. You want something to plink with? Ruger 10/22. The semi will be fun to shoot and cheap on ammo. You'll have a great gun that will hold value. For what it's worth, if you start off with a small cal like this you can focus on shooting principles and not develop bad shooting habits right off the bat with something in 30 cal or bigger. Big cals often have peeps flinching right away.

Crawl, walk, run. :)

There's another decent plinker but it's a bolt gun. Savage puts out some good stuff. My daughter hit an 8x8 in steel plate (not just once either) standing with it. It's the Mk II FVT (peep sights) hope I got it right but you can find it easy enough. The reason I say bolt gun is cause it'll slow ya down to focus on your shooting.

Focus on the shot:)
