An SKS (Yugo in my case) and a crate of ammo was my first firearm. Right now it's the cheapest centerfire out there ammo-wise. When the ammo supply runs out (in between slow boats from God knows where) buy a 22 and a couple of bricks of ammo and keep on shooting. Buy another crate when the boat comes in, put the 22 in the safe while the ammo lasts, repeat. Although I tend to buy a new gun in between boats, it's so much more fun opening the safe and asking yourself "what do I feel like shooting today ? decisions, decisions ...."
Oh, and say goodbye to your life savings, shooting is seriously addictive, and it can get expensive at times....
