My First Rifle?

I am a big fan of the CZ rifles. There appear to be 2 left hand .22LR rifles in their line up but as far as I can tell only the 452 American is available though CZ USA and it does not have iron sights. The 452-2E ZKM LH Lux is available from CZ Europe. It has about the best open iron sights made IMHO. There are dealers that deal with CZ Europe. I think if you want to stick with left hand shooting that is the gun to start with. Having said that my CZ rifleds are all right handed and I have the same eye situation you have. I have been shooting to a pretty good skill level for decades with iron sights and have no problems. I wouldn't recommend you go to a semi auto as ejection varies almost to particular guns and right side ejection can come close to your eyes. With eye protection you might be OK but I know some who have tried it and find it distracting to have a cartridge casing eject across your line of sight.

I am fairly new as well to shooting. I have fired several thousand rounds through a buddies old old old Lakefield mark II bolt action, and a few rounds a long long time ago through another buddies brand new semi auto (sorry was so long ago I forgot what kind it was). I do remember my buddies semi auto was brand new right out of the box and was fun for a little while, but we burned through rounds like a kid goes through candy. When I met another guy that took me out shooting with his old Lakefield I actually learned to take my time and aim and use the gun properly.

Just from my experience I now prefer a bolt action... cheaper on ammo and more accurate (depending on who is shooting though LOL). I just got out today with my very first rifle (cz 452 silhouette 22 lr) and for a new rifle it was a lot of fun and incredibly accurate. If you are worried about cost I would have to suggest a bolt action over a semi auto... you will save money in the long run for sure.

My honest advice (and remember I am still really inexperienced and new) would be to try and save up and bite the bullet so to speak and get a decent rifle like a cz. CZ I hear now makes a sweet 22 lr with a "set trigger" ability (hair trigger). I believe they can be fired left or right handed. Youtube even has a video of a girl shooting exactly like you described.

I hope the links work. Sorry to ramble, but just my 2 cents worth.

I've been shooting rifles for over 25 years....... minus a few years where I really had a hard on for bows....and have been hearing the semi vs bolt debate for just as long. How you pull the trigger has NOTHING to do with the type of action. Stance, cheek wield, breathing, sitting, prone, offhand or off the bench, standing, sling or no sling, sand bags or bipod...... the type of action still doesn't matter! I will concede that if you are teaching a young shooter, a bolt action is preferred as kids tend to rush between shots with a semi. Most adults that understand that they are learning and must take the time to address the shot will take the time needed between shots. As for the accuracy debate between bolt action vs semi....... Most rifles will shoot more accurately that the person shooting it. Inherent accuracy can only be tested by taking the human element out of the equation. How accurate you can be will depend on how much time you spend shooting.
My advise.....find a mentor that Really knows how to shoot, ask at a local range if someone would like to teach you.

Enjoy your new sport, new shooters are always welcome!
