I picked up one off the exchange not so long ago (thx lefty) and have been pleasantly surprised! They are a tad heavier than I expected but still tolerable with a nice balance. Despite the heavy trigger weight I also find it to be very nice. I put a conquest 3-9 on it which provided adequate eye relief but I don't think I couldn't go with anything less without extension type rings. I've been shooting some older Remington 117gr psp factory ammo that came with her and a few reloads with 75gr vmax's. I'm very happy with the results I've been getting! A few of the vmax loads I've worked up have also shot quite well. For some reason I had the impression #1's didn't shoot terribly well

Correct - 257Roberts indeed! Yeah they are a nice overall length for sure without sacrificing barrel length. Can anyone school me on the +p designation I've read about?

You're good to go for +P, issue was all the old Mausers and the like, weak surplus, converted to .257 Roberts. So the pressure limit was kept artificially low for a long time with factory ammunition. Load data provides +P as well as standard, and in a Ruger No.1 you are definitely not limited to standard.

+p stands for plus pressure.
For example, .38 special +p rounds are sort of midway between 'average' .38 pressures and low-end .357 rounds. (and are Not recommended for use in certain .38 revolvers.)

The reason would be that some of them didn't, and since they are presented at a noticeably higher price than an ordinary assembly-line bolt-action hunting rifle those ones would get talked about and heard of as disappointing. As with many products, the people who are happy with them tend not to talk as much or as loudly about it.

]God I love No.1's[/B]. 257 Bob is a great choice as well, that's a fine rifle there.

I hear ya! I love No.1 AB's! I just don't need that giant frt site on there on the other ones!

I'm just not as fond of the single shot as I thought I might be. I had wanted to try one out first hand for quite some time and couldn't resist any longer! I much prefer my bolt guns

Ardent is correct, a few surplus small ring Spanish Mausers were converted to 257 Roberts, so the pressures were kept low for factory loads. Large rings didn't have the same issue of developing lug setback. As for the #1, they are an extremely strong, well proven action and can be quite accurate. I have had several over the years and just started playing with an RSI in 243. Accuracy is quite promising.
