finally got an SKS for the collection today, been wanting on for awhile and saw a good deal today (a Russian refurb in nice shape and 700 rnds of Russian Surplus for $375) so i grabbed it:D

something interesting i wanted to ask the red rifle experts on here is why my top cover has no date on it:confused:, its just plain steel and seems to have a small area where somehting was carefully ground off and reblued long ago....this Russian SKS also has a Laminate stock i believe? (see pics) keep in mind its not de-cosmolined yet, just got it home a little while ago!

also interesting to note it appears the crown of the barrel was drilled jsut slightly or somehting (some sort of arsenal work?>

Its a letter series gun, one of the last series made in 55 or56 before the tooling was sold to China. Older SKSs don't have the star on the side of the receiver like yours. The rifle will also have a Russian letter after the serial number.

The laminate stock may or may not be original, the last letter series guns were the only ones to get an original laminatestock once in a while.

Nice sks you got, no date and the Tula star on receiver so its a late 1955 or a 1956.
