I have my first SKS! second thanks for the SKS id thread and all the great info on this forum!
I didnt realize they were such a hot comodity right now.
There werent any in stores from Orillia and through the GTA! none
On my Drive home i stopped in london and picked up their last SKS, a 1943r refurb for $253 including tax and a 20 pack of ammo to try it out.

The numbers are mismatched. From the looks of things the original was polished off the receiver and a new one, BP 558 was stamped on as well as on the, bolt, dust cover, stock, magazine, which has the frankenpin and all other parts have been electro penciled with the same code. The hand guard is still the original beech. The trigger guard does not match as it has an H Q looking crylics and then 556. Its amazing the great deal of care involved with the refurb process.

All the components appear to be of the same late 1953 variant and are blued so i think this is still an all original rifle.

I cleaned the cosmoline with break cleaner then coated all the parts with SP3 penetrating oil over night and then wiped it clean. I used murphy oils soap to clean the stock and then 0000 steel wool to smooth it out.
I am totally amazed with the quality in machining in that there is not one sharp edge to be found on the entire rifle.
Off to the range
I was able to get initial groups of a couple inches at 50 yrds low and to the left. Not one single misfire but what a tease with only 20 rounds. Here is a pic of it in sporter mode with 5 round stripper clip.

Im planning on getting a black hand guard since its mismatched anyways and a slip on but pad. Does anyone have any experience with the rubber bolt buffers?

get a few crates of ammo before getting any accessories. bolt buffers i have only made my own from a piece of high density rubber it works good still has more kick than my cz 858 though.

Is there anything to look for in picking an SKS? The shooting edge has about 15 Russian variants on a rack. They all lokk similar with some stock having a nicers grain pattern than others. Also some have the chrome barrel lining stop short of the crown and some have it protrude over the crown.

Thought for a minute there that you had the most valuable SKS on the planet...
but a 53 Russian is still a damn fine gat :)
Enjoy and dont coddle it ...its soldier proof, you cant hurt it...and I know you wont neglect it.

Just a question, I know its a refurb but when would the process of been done?

sigsauer226, things to look for, from what ive read here, matching serial numbers, for it to be blued, original beech stock or laminate seems to be a preference, a 1949 original or a 55/56. Or just about any SKS in between. Although any year a non refurb is the best.
