Just picked up my first SKS, a numbers matching 1955/6 Tula "Letter Series", marked with a 'K' after the SN on the left side of the receiver. Got it from a local shop for $200.00. The beech stock is a little dinged up but otherwise it's in great shape. Looking forward to heading out to shoot it ASAP.

Wondering what the deal is with the "Letter Series"?

They were the last of the SKS's made by the Russians. There are various schools of thought as to when they were made. They are normally referred to as being made in 56 but there are theories that they may have made them at other factories other than the Tula plant from existing parts as late at 58. We can't know for sure. The Cyrillic reverse N ("I" in English)letter guns seem the most common of the letter guns followed by the "D" and "K" which are less common. Nice score. Of course pics are always appreciated;)

Heres my wee SKS collection so far.

The top is a 52' Tula, then my 53' Tula, and my Chinese military in an ATI stock, waiting on a vented handguard for the Chinese then I'll add the BC tactical mount, and my see all open sight(thought I would try one of those sights out),the 5/30 steel mag needs a little tweaking as it fails to feed the 5th round atm.

The "no date" Tulas were made from spare parts. The Russians sold and transfered the Tula tooling to the Chinese in 1956. They may have been produced for years after 1956 until all parts were used up. Nobody really knows for sure. However, I highly suspect that the Russians focused primarily on AK47 production and didn't have that many parts left over to build SKS's or the capacity/space devoted to them. In the end, I don't collect the "1955/56" Tulas, so I don't have too much experience from which to draw conclusions.
