My first SKS!!!

Well,

It's like an old dream come true. I went to my local CT in Yellowknife and I purchased the nicest SKS I could find. The manager was quite good to me and I had me look at many before I settled for a 1952 Tula refurb. (The oil can/cleaning kit and single ammo pouch were part of the deal).

BTW CT in Yellowknife is now stocking A LOT of firearms. Compared to last summer, it's night and day. It's got all kinds of shotguns, hunting rifles, guide guns, mare's legs, even a Norc M14. For SKS, they had timbersmith-stocked ones.

I don't know everything about SKS, but I browsed enough the forum to say:

-Bolt+receiver+dust cover is matching. dust cover seems a little BBQ'ed but not sure.
-Gas piston is electropenciled with the same number as the rest.
-The stock is force matched ###XX
-The magazine doesn't match the rest

Besides a few marks the butt is decent.

I also purchased a crate of 1200 rounds, I think its Czech stuff. Plastic bagged with cardboard liner and all that on stripper clips.

Now I know that SKS have to be cleaned before being fired, but I don't see much cosmoline. Are those rifles already stripped from cosmo?

congrats man, enjoy, make sure you clean it with boiling water. cosmo will melt off and then you just need to wipe dry and oil and re-assemble. too much fun

as long as the firing pin is rattling around in the bolt you are good to go. just point the muzzle in a safe direction when you charge it to be on the safe side

Clean it anyways. Especially the firing pin / firing pin channel. Make sure the pin rattles freely inside the bolt.

Is it me or the cleaning rod is pretty short?

The bolt seems alright and is black in color. Firing pin rattling good.

The bore is shiny, the rifling is strong.
I,m not an expert, but mechanically the parts don't seem to have much wear. That rifle hasn't seen much action. Good deal, I'm happy.
