My First Surplus Ammo - corrosive?

:agree: I've been down the "need more SKS ammo!" road quite a bit LoL.... I just recently started using "Fluid Film" on my SKS as G96 is expensive here, and i have access to gallons of fluid film... I wouldn't spray it on my more expensive firearms, but it's awesome on the SKS and has salt neutralizing properties, and i've never had a corrosion issue crop up since switching to it.

I use boiling water and Hoppes/CLP. The only place I've gotten rust was on the bayonet hinge, due to me being retarded and pouring the boiling water all down the barrel/action and cleaning drying everything BUT the bayonet. Luckily, it was just surface rust and I got it off with some solvent and a rag. Now I put a dab of oil on the bayonet hinge after every clean and it's smoother than ever.

And yeah, I've never even seen G96 here. I would imagine it's more expensive, most things are here in Nova Socialism.

Is the cost savings of corrosive worth the hassle?

7.62x39

Mfs non-corrosive 500 rounds $169
Surplus corrosive 720 rounds $165

There's a few places to get G96, my local sporting outfitter has it, and Ferguson's has it in Westville... I've taken friends new rifles that were treated and lubed with other products and applied G96 and let stand for 10 minutes and wiped down and they were jaw dropping confused with the invisible corrosion it leached out of the steel.... If it meets US Military MIL-PRF-63460E specs and is approved for use by them, that's good enough for me. :) I swear by it... I have a 4Litre jug of it coming up in June when family heads up from the USA. w:h:

But as of late the fluid film has been keeping the rusties @ bay without any problems... Everyone has personal prefs for their own reasons... I haven't tried the boiling water treatment yet, as i've never had a lick of corrosion on my rifles. But i bloody well soak the bee-jeezus out of them when i clean them.

Exactly, as long as you use something that will neutralize the salts in the ammo, you should be fine, regardless of weather that something is water or a purpose made solvent/oil.

If you ever do use water, just remember to dry your damn bayonet hinge, unlike me!

Try spraying down with "Ford" or "GM" Non-chlorinated brakeparts cleaner.. It displaces water on contact... and then it itself evaporates in seconds

I like the sounds of that. I normally use a can of compressed air which works really well except on the bayonet, I'll have to look for some for it.

Just make sure you get one of those 2... as crappy tires brands and NAPA and CARQUEST brands leave a residue.. Just pop in to your local GM or Ford dealership parts dept and get a can..... I buy this sh*t by the case LoL But a little goes a long way. :)
