My first try at "precision" shooting - and I use the term loosely

I bought a Tikka T3 Sporter about 2 weeks ago, an impulse buy. Walked into a gun shop, and someone had just brought in a used one, in .308, to sell. Bought it without even debating, as I had been wanting to get a nice rifle to try a bit of longer range shooting. Also bought a Bushnell Elite Tactical 4.5-30x50 to go on it.

Took it out to the local gravel pit today to sight it in. Started at 25yards, got it zeroed, then moved back to about 100 yards, to re-adjust the scope. Here's a picture of my final 9 shots, from 100 yards. Using Sellier & Bellot 180gr .308 ammo.

Started in the Upper left, and got closer to centre as I adjusted the scope. The last three shots were the bullseye, and the two directly to the right of it. I think I flinched with the last one, as a bug was biting me right then ! (blackflies were horrible!!! they were covering my arms and face).

I know it's not tight groups, but i'm quite happy with it as my first time shooting the rifle, my first time shooting .308, and my first use of shooting bags front and rear. Figured out how to use them from a video in Youtube!

Hope to get lots more practice over the next few months before winter.

As an aside, I tried the "set trigger" thing on the Sporter.... holy cow that is a light trigger! I was lined up and as I brought my finger down, to get it placed on the trigger correcty, I brushed the trigger and it fired! I think with practice, it will be a handy feature, but for now, I'll use the regular trigger pull - don't want any accidents!

All in all, a great experience with my new rifle!

Nice man! the Sporter is a super great rifle. I have shot sub moa @ 100 and 200 every time I go out, and mine shoots many types of ammo well. I bought in about 4 months ago. I am using a Bushnell Elite Tactical as well. its good enough to start with i think..

just really take your time setting that stock up, get it perfect it will pay off. That and using the Super Trigger lol. Eliminates trigger manipulation, I mean all you have to do is breath on it lol..

Enjoy, and next time put up a pic or two of your Sporter

tikkas are damned fine rifles. that S&B ammo is pretty poor. get yourself some of the federal gold match stuff or even contact guys like paul reibin that sell match-ready 308.

remember to let your gun cool dowm sporters are mostly a hunting gun and they heat up when you fire too much ammo in a short period. that will cause your barrel to wear faster and may cause your shots to move as the barrel heats up.

you'll soon be mortgaging the house and selling your wife's organs like the rest of us. it is a great sport.

Yes, I figured it was some crappy ammo... got it mainly to just have something to sight in the scope with, and for friends to use while trying out the gun (don't want to waste good ammo on them! :) )

Even though I only put about 30 rounds through it today, I noticed that the barrel was quite warm when I was putting it back into the case. Didn't think that only 30 shots spaced aver about 45 minutes would do that, but that was something else I learned today.
