I am tempted to try something much more modest with a spare Issy that I have in the gun safe. One mechanical question- You state that the gas port was bored out to accomodate the shorter barrel; just why is this necessary? I my ignorance I assummed that shortening the barrel ahead of the gas port would not make any difference but obviously you know WAY more about this project than me. Thanks.
Hi guys, I've been away for the past week, so to get caught up:
- The CFOs are not issuing SAPs to take prohibs to the range anymore, but I had my annual SAP done up prior to the cut off date, so the NB CFO honoured it (it expired 5 Jan), so unfortunately my FAL hasn't had any rounds put through it since it's Duracoating.
- For the gas port, when you chop the barrel down, you need to enlarge the gas port slightly in order to offset the reduction of gasses being forced through it (shorter barrel, less gas through the port). Do a search over at the FAL Files and there are pages on this topic.
The downside for me was I started this project and was enjoying it a lot. Unfortunately, I was about 75% done, and then the CFOs stuck it to us prohib owners. At that stage I had to finish the gun. I fired it until my SAP expired, then went to work with the Duracoating and finishing.

I'm kinda surprised that since you can no longer take it to the range they dont require you to deactivate it or turn it in during one of the many "amnesty's". Well at least they know where it is when they decide you should no longer be allowed to own such a dangerous "weapon". These laws truly suck.....
Back in 86 at wainwright we did a deal with the PPCLI armourer/REME lads and acquired some of your rear sights to fit to our L1A1 SLRs. They were much better than ours! The boss found out, he didnt mind but even recce pln arent above the QM in law!

RobAK - Why the Metric lower? Arent you know stuck with the use of Metric-only mags? I know that there are more accessories for the metric lowers in the US. The project looks great.

I agree about the C1 sights but the whole thing ended up being a chain of one decision necessitating another. I really liked some of the "###y" mods avaiable out of the US (like the SAW pistol grip), so that needed a metric lower. Since the sight height of the metric lower is at a different elevation than the inch pattern I then needed to compensate for that with a higher sight sight profile, which in this case the closest match for what I needed was the Isreali sight.
My mags are a bit of everything and they all worked back when I was allowed to shoot the FAL. I went with the metric lower only because of the "###y" US mods were built around metric lowers (like the SAW style pistol grip).
Hopefully Stormbringer's hearing will put the CFO's back in their place and allow us to go out and shoot these again.
