Hi all

So I lent my Savage 10 BA rifle to a friend of mine and he ran some surplus ammo through it!

I was wondering how much of a damage can the 7.62*51 (.308) Surplus ammo do to the barrel?? I've been told that the steel casing of the projectiles can be HORRIBLE to the barrel, and he ran about 100 rounds of these stuff down the barrel!

Should I be worried??

No need to worry. What kind of "surplus" went down the barrel? Was it the Norinco 7.62? If so it has a bi-metal jacket and a steady diet of it is not great for the rifle but only 100 rounds should not harm it.

If it was actual Nato ammo (M80, M118,) then you have absolutely nothing to be worried about. If the rounds had a black tip (AP) or a red painted tip (tracer) this is again not great to be running in a bolt gun but 100 rounds should not harm anything.

No part of the projectile that makes contact with the barrel would never be made of steel, the bullets would be copper jacketed, just like any other bullet. Steel casings are very rare with 7.62x51, unlike 7.62x39 where they are the norm. Even if it was a steel case round, you are not running it in and out of the chamber at the rate a semi-auto does. I highly doubt it would have any ill effect.

Just clean it really good in case the ammo had corrosive primers. That's probably very unlikely, but I would take the precaution.
 
Nothing to worry about except if it's corrosive ammo. Use hot water first.
I have a 7.62x39 test rifle that is in it's third case of corrosive steel cased/cored ammo. Still as accurate as when I installed it.
 
You bet! Its a super good rifle that shoots awesome groupings even under my hands (with 0 training and no skill)....

I;ll take it out someday to see if it still shoots fine...if it doesnt Imma make the dude buy me lobster haha. Hopefully it won't have any problems..*fingers crossed*

Thanks! I've cleaned the crap outta the rifle after getting a bit paranoid...I thought the norinco are the M80 Bi-metal ones have a steel/copper layer on the projectile instead of pure copper? That's why I got worried haha.
 
i actually had a guy think that factory 175 grain hpbt federal gold medal match ammo would wear out his barrell faster than his south african surplus lol
 
I run Norinco 7.62 NATO through my R700 when I run out of brass all the time. I always bring 60 or so rounds with me just in case. The only thing I find with the Norinco stuff is you get the occasional over-pressured round and the case will swell making it hard to eject, it could be hard on your ejector over time if this happens frequently. But fortunately it seems to only occur once in a while. As mentioned above just make sure to give it a good cleaning afterward.
