Hi, figuered I would document my mauser this morning and share the pics with you all. My camera is, well s**tty to say the least so I dont have all the pics I would like. Its from 1918 from the amberg arsenal with the amberg markings, also there are prussian markings and later in its long life it got a israeli marking. Also with most/all german guns it has a german eagle stamp.

Thanks guys, I always wonder where its been and whats it seen. 1918, 2 world wars and then may have been used by the IDF. Its basically a history lesson, if it could speak.
 
Start off, there really weren't a helluvva lotta Amberg rifles in the first place. The plant just wasn't anywhere near the size of the big DWM plant in Berlin or Mauser Brothers in Oberndorf or even Erfurt, which was another State plant. But they built this baby. It would have been used in the First World War, no mistake there.

Likely, after the First War, it could have seen service in such neat things as the Kapp Putsch, the Spartacist Revolt, in which it could have been on either side, it cold have been swiped and used by one of the Freikorps.... almost anything is possible.

But it got back into German service somehow (if it ever left) and was modded into a Short rifle: stockwork changed, barrel shortened and so forth.

Follow this by service in War Two, then a trip to the sunny Middle East, use in the Jewish revolt, the first war against the Arabs, 1956 Suez War and a hundred border actions.

In the 1960s, replacement in front-line service by more modern equipment and conversion to 7.62x51 NATO, used in that role for a few years and then sold for junk.

Yup, a whole history book.... and it only weighs about 9 pounds, loaded!

Should be a great shooter, too. Really hope you don't scope it...... so many are already ruined by Bubba and his friends.

Simply amazing, she is just bursting at the seams with history. Now I'm jealous :D.

Could you take a picture of the right side of the receiver ?

I know its hard to see but it is stampped Gew 98, its in the second picture. And as smelli said it has been modded.
 
It appears to be a Gew 98 reworked by the Nazis to a 98k. If it had the WWI stock cut back it would be a complete transitional rework except for the 7.62 barrel. I would love to have a transitional with the 8mm barrel in my collection.
What are you using for a camera?
 
Im useing my camera phone... Ive taken dozens of photos of the mauser and those are the best ones.

Edit: what do you mean by transitional? just with a different stock?

Look at the picture showcasing left side of the receiver wall, you will see "Gew.98" in gothic script.

One of my initial thoughts was that she may have been re-worked by the Weimar republic but it looks like she wasn't. Instead, she was one of many rifles hidden away in weapons caches across Germany and probably taken out in the mid to late 30s and reworked to Gewehr 98M specification and probably again post 1939 to be shortened to Kar98k specs. You have yourself a very interesting specimen!
 
Very nice rifle! How's the bore? You will find most of these have 56 -58 dated barrels (Israeli). Nice find, lots of history there.
The stock looks like an Israeli replacement beech set from the 60's and early seventies.
 
The bore is in really good shape, I wont say perfect but it would be near. Im still learning how to shoot with the sights (No one ever taught me) but at 40 yards it shoots high and to the right and it groups very nice.

Is there a web site to can show me how to take the stock off?
 
Hmm doesnt look like something I want to do, havening never dont it before. I will wait till I get a different one.
 
Here is my Gew 98

This is my Gew 98 1915 Danzig. I think this was given to the Polish post ww1 as a war rep. rifle (I think?) going by the "W" stamp and the Polish Eagle. May have seen some time in the hands of the Spainish? Can anyone shed some more light on this rifle please. A in a O stamp on butt?
