What is the deal with guys posting proper scope information???

I see this all the time...
3x9
2.5x8
3x9x40
Somewhere along the line the "X" has taken the place of the "-" and it's driving me nutz.

It's NOT a 3x9 it's a 3-9 not a 3 by 9 its a 3 to 9
it's not a 2.5x8 it's a 2.5-8 not a 2.5 by 8 it's a 2.8 to 8
It's NOT a 3x9x40 it's a 3-9x40, not a 3 by 9 by 40 it's a 3 to 9 by 40

C'mon everyone, let's get with the program!

Sorry I just had to rant.
I'm much better now though.
Taking a deep breath now - breathing out the red stuff.
Maybe I just need some feng-shui, rocks, bamboo, water & insense.

So, what's the best 3x9-40 scope for zombie bear defence? I need it to be durable and mil-spec, but I don't want to spend more than $150. :D

... and yet when I see 3x9x40 or 3-9x40 I have typically managed to deduce it's not a 6-18 x 50 scope I'm looking at... ;)

+1 on this, LOL. BadAsMo, your beef is abolutely accurate, and the goofy terminology being used kinda gets on my nerves as well. However, I didn't bother to post about it, because I knew the thread would go...well...like this one has!

It is simple ignorance both in not knowing or caring proper terminology......to make things worse I've seen this 3x9x32 crap in LeBarrons ,Sail catalogs.
Sooner or later 3-9x32 will be the incorrect way.
 
You are right BadAsMo, but bringing up stuff like that tends to make people dig in and do it just for spite, or to wind you up for fun.
 
properly written it is 3x-9x with the being the POWER of the scope,with the - being the by
in english ( long form) it's a 3TIMES TO 9TIMES with a 40 mm objective- you go into a camera store and ask for a 3x converter, and the clerk will give you a lens that magnifies 3 TIMES the normal eye; and that's REALLY where all this stuff comes from
 
I agree with this post, get it right. How many times have you seen Merry Christmas written Merry X-mas, it makes me sick that people are willing to butcher their own language and than laugh at it (spelling mistakes aside).
