My God - What is the deal with guys posting proper scope information???

That's awesome!!This is an interesting revolution in scope nomenclature ...
It means that I am the owner of a Sightron SIII -900, a Bushnell Elite -162, and a Bushnell Legend -400.
If I'm a complete idiot and confuse the "-" with an "x" then I'd be running around telling people I've got a Sightron 94, a Bushnell -14 and another Bushnell 35. The cool scopes would only have really big negative numbers!
But let's be serious, at the end of the day when the zombies invade this will sounds like pretty petty stuff ... you'll be too occupied loading clips into your CQB PDW while trying to save your family!
Don't buy 3x9x40 scopes and everything will be perfect. And as one post said you put a clip in a rifle or handgun and read a magazine while sitting on the throne. I am from western Canada and every body calls it a clip.

soooo lets say a guy had a redfield , widefield , 3x9 scope ..... would a person measure corner to corner of the squared off lense , like on a tv screen ?
or would a person have to calculate the surface area of the lense in mm, then convert that measurement to a comparable round lense ?

Op does have a point... and to be honest it bothers me, too. But there is a good reason for doing it the wrong way.
Try searching the EE for 3-9x40 and you'll get jack even if there are results there. But searching 3x9x40 will give excellent returns. The minus (-) as well as a bunch of other symbols are unusable in vbulletin search. I'm a linux guy, tried all the dang tricks in the book but can't search for 30-06 either. Just to keep myself out of a straight jacket I stick to three simple character cartridges like 7mm, 7x57, and 308 and avoid ones like 25-06, 7-08, etc. They suck simply because you can't search for em.

I love it when a guy calls me and asks if i have any "good cheap scopes for sale" cracks me up every time. As for the clip vs mag thing you need to include detachable box magazine in the mix if you want to be politically correct.

Just to make sure you stay in crazy-land, consider that some wouldn't consider either picture in your sig-line to be a clip. You could put a picture of a half-moon or en-bloc clip up to illustrate your point, but a stripper clip is properly known as a "charger."
Personally, I call them all clips.
... 3-9 or 3x9 ... clip or a magazine ... cartridge or a casing ... shotgun round and a rifle shell ... 12 gauge or 16 gauge ... unloaded gun or a loaded gun ...
I guess there is a sliding scale for a need to communicate details accurately - after all, some details matter more than others. Regardless, sometimes the devil is in the details... .
As to the scope details, maybe this helps: A "2 by 4" is a piece of lumber, while "2 to 4" is a jail sentence...
