My grandads rifle

Wow .......

For an old "iron sights" milsurp, that's outstanding......... congratulations.

I can't shoot like that on my best day..... :D

Regards,
Badger

For clarity, there's no such animal as a P17. There's the P14 Enfield in .303Br, and the 1917 Enfield in .30-06. The 1917 is a fraternal twin, however.

You'd best put up a pic for everybody to ogle.

Of the rifle, I mean.

Is it bubba'd?

Unfortunatley............yes. I did reseach it though. Once the war was over, BSA armouries had a whack of spare parts for rifles they no longer needed. So, they assembled, sporterized, and sold them back to the North American Market.

It's by now means a collector, but it has the Winchester bolt, Remington trigger guard, BSA receiver (you get the point).

I was thinking about spending a little $$ and getting a stock made for it from these guys.

A buddy of mine (a weapons tech with the CF) was already done the metal work.

Ultimately, I want to dress it up and give it back to my Granddad...get the sparkle back into his eye, and drag him out on a day trip or two for Whitetail.

Thats a pretty hefty load for .303 i though IMR 4350 maxed out at 46gr?

It's NOT a .303 (P14) it's a 30-06 (M1917). Maximum 30-06 loads are quite a bit heavier than .303 loads :D

Hodgdon's manual lists H4350 174gr bullet 303 load as 48gr max. For a 165gr bullet load for the 30-06, it lists a max of 59gr. So, hahx is well below the max with 54gr

That's Kaiser... Kizer sounds like some cheap watered down semi-beer out of the former East Germany.

Also, lets see some pictures of this rifle... I'm quite intruiged if it looks like an actual sporter (read: well done) or ... well... Bubba trying out his new hacksaw after drinking... a six pack of Kizer

Okay, so the metal has been irreprably changed but it doesn't look like a bad job at all.

Although the hacked up military stock is rather depressing. A real (in other words: not hacked up) stock would make this rifle look like a gem. Its collectability has been destroyed forever now so you might as well just go nuts and dress her up.

http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/ sells sporter stocks for the M1917 I believe... when their site isn't being a #####.

Cool.

I've got a BSA "sporterized" U.S. Model of 1917 too. Looks similar without the checkering on the pistol grip.

A buddy gave it to me as he got it in a trade with a few other pieces and didn"t want it.

It had the ears ground off too, was drilled and tapped already for a scope, but I had to have the holes re-done 'cause they were out of line. Put a scope on it. Had to re-crown it though, and shim the action into the stock witha credit card shim under a guard screw and voila - spare rifle and in 30-06 too. Went out and shot a bear.

My Grandads rifle - revisted

It was a shooter before I put any money into it. I have since got a custom MonteCarlo sporter stock w/ varminter forearm from Richards Micofit stocks in California, free floated the barrel, and spent a little $$ on a scope. Huntsman reblued the metal for me. Maybe if I talk nice to him, he might bed it too!:onCrack:

Yes, I know that is still just a Enfield 17, and some of you are saying WTF? But.....WTF!

PS, don't tell the wife about the scope!!;)

Henceforth, the device shall be known as a Whitetail Weapons Platform.

It's not heavy for that action.

It would probably shoot even better if the loads were reduced.
