Well today I went out with my dad, brother and friend. We headed up Truck Road 12, and at about half way up we found ourselfs locked behind a gate. So we all decided, walk 15 mintues up, if we see nothing we turn around. Well, we went up this small road the goes up at a good steep angle. About 3/4 the way up we hear this loud woosh sound and all we see is about 5 to 10 grouse just take off from the ditch (it was covered with trees and bushes, we wouldnt have seen them). They all take off in seperate directions (pretty smart on their part ). This one grouse decides to hang around the ditch and flys up into a tree. My friend sees that one of the shotgun carriers (dad and brother) can get a shot, so he points the ditch chicken out and boom....dad takes the shot and nails the chicken right on. Anyways, friend goes up and gets the bird. And on the way back we saw one, took 3 shots at it...too far away, even for the .22...we let him get away, untill next time .

So for about 4 hours of hunting, we got one good size ditch chicken.

PS> Its my dads first ditch chicken .

<Sorry if some of you have seen this on Hunting BC>

Ok, here is the picture from today.
Dad (shooter) is on the left, my good friend kyle (human retriever) is on the right.
Both guns are mine
Dad is holding my Mossber 835 in 12 gauge
Kyle is holding my Ruger 77/22 in 22LR

Congrats.

But are you not required to wear blaze orange?
Reason I ask is because I am still unsure, even in our own Reg book for Ontario it's worded difficult.. anyone care to inform me? I know you HAVE to when it is deer/moose season.

I do carry a blaze vest in my pack, for walking through dense bush.

Yes only 1 bird, like i said, we started shooting at one, but he got away (50-75 yard shots).

With a few exceptions, you need to wear blaze orange if there's any open season for big game (i.e. centerfire rifle), regardless of what you are hunting (i.e. if you're hunting grouse but there's potential for someone else to be in the bush hunting bear/moose/deer... the you need to wear the orange).

From the Ontario MNR Hunting Regs for 2006:

Hunter Orange

The objective of the hunter orange regulation is to maximize hunter safety without negatively impacting hunting success. Under this regulation, all licensed hunters, including archery hunters hunting during the gun season for deer and moose, are required to wear hunter orange.

As well, all black bear hunters hunting during the black bear season are required to wear hunter orange except when in a tree stand. (This exception is in place because, unlike deer and moose, black bears have colour vision.)

Waterfowl hunters, wild turkey hunters and archery hunters in archery-only areas are exempt from the hunter orange requirement. A hunter orange garment and head cover must be worn.

The hunter orange garment must cover a minimum of 400 square inches (2,580 square cm) above the waist and be visible from all sides. Open mesh or camouflage hunter orange must not be part of the 400 square inches. A hunting coat or vest generally meets this requirement. The hunter orange head cover may have: open mesh; a peak or brim colour other than hunter orange; a crest or logo which does not completely cover the hunter orange on the side where it is affixed. The head cover may not contain camouflage material.

Hunter orange colour standards are generally consistent across North America. Manufacturers can provide information regarding clothing compliance with this standard.
