My Gun Stinks

So i bought another SKS a few years ago from a dealer only because i liked the look of the laminated stock . The rifle is totally de-greased and the butt stock stinks like grease . It feels clean and not greasy but i can't wipe the stink out of the wood . I don't want to bring it up to my face or rest my cheek on it . How do i get the stink out ?

If the oven won't sweat it out, then maybe re shellac it? Or shower it in cheap aftershave...

I use a hair dryer or carefully use a heat gun and boil the oil out of the wood and keep wiping it of. I also use brake clean to get all the cosmoline of the metal and I’ve used it on the stock as well with no issues.

Did that, and the smell lingered in the dishwasher. Wife was soooo pissed

First thing that popped into mind was the guy who put his entire M-305 in the dishwasher lol.

I also love the smell of WWII GI bore cleaner to clean it after firing

Nothing beats the smell of Cosmoline on Milsurps. Wish they made a cologne that smelled like it.

It's an awesome smell and your cheek should be honoured to be close to it. Wear your cosmo-rash with pride. Also, not sure if the laminate stocks have the cleaning stash in the butt, but maybe there is a big orange blob of grease in there?

Too late in the year now, but I placed my "new to me" cosmolined rifles in the attic during hot summer days when the attic was 35-40C. It would "sweat" out cosmoline and I would check it every so often to wipe it down.

My brother purchased a beautiful hex receiver mosin a few years back. The gun looked nice and clean until he brought it to the range. He got it so hot that the cosmoline that had been left between the action and the stock started oozing out. There was so much that it looked like it was taking a dump.

use a Hair dryer on high and blot up the grease . and if you still hate it I'll take it off your hands for $50 dollars . then I'll clean it up .

No sympathy here. Cosmoline is as much a part of an old Russian sks as the rest of it. You wouldn’t buy a house next to a gun range and complain about the noise...
