My hits just fell off the paper...

I was doing some load development in my AR the other night, when for the last eleven shots I had a mystery. My last three targets were puzzling, I had four good hits grouping well then the fifth hit the target below (low 10") the next ten shots missed the paper entirely. Setup is as follows: AR-15 w/20" barrel, unit has ~450-500 rounds down range. Scope is Bushnell 6500 mounted with Burris tactical rings on a riser mount. All the srews are tight on riser, rings, etc... taking a quick look down the bore all looks fine and lines up with the sights.

Ideas?
 
Do a repeatability test on your scope...even the good ones sometimes fail. Try your irons next time (if you have them on your set up) if they work it's your scope...or really bad loads:D


My bet is the scope.

What is the rate of twist and what is the grain of bullet? If you have to high of rate of twist with too low gain bullet an ak will have tighter groups then you could ever get. From what I've shoot 1:7 and mil surplus work great together but if you have a 1:9 twist I would sugest no less than 55 grain but 62 grain works better. Thats what I've noticed away. Also make sure that you have put lock tight on all your mounting screws because if you didn't and shot off more than 100 rounds the vibrations will work it loose. Hope this helps you out.
 
The fact that you're using a Bushnell scope makes me wonder if it's the scope that's giving you grief. Bushnell optics are for economy only. I've killed Bushnell scopes after only 4 uses before. The only upside to their name is that they do infact offer lifetime warranties.
 
Prior to the sudden shift in impacts I did adjust the elevation and windage a couple minutes. Seemed to work fine at first, I didn't reset turrets to zero straight away. However at some point I did. I wonder if this has something to do with it?

Twist is 1:9

Bullets are 55gr hornady SPSX (Doees the SX, super explosive, mean these have thinner jackets or something? and are disenegrating...)

Charge was ~1.0 grains below max using BLC-2

52 gr berger HP's are super accurate so I think the 55gr is okay for 1:9

I think this was the problem... I was out shooting again with some known good loads and all was fine. I guess I should try some box tests to see.
