My journey as a first time hunter

Ugh, you mean that you can take a mule deer in your area and you didn't buy a tag?

Hard, quick lesson to learn. Spend the money on all the tags for the game you can legally shoot in your areas you intend to hunt. Always have tags.

I went to northern BC for a moose hunt, and they have a general zone up there for bison, and the tag is $70. The probability of me seeing a bison in that area are about 1% or less. Could you imagine being out there with no tag, and seeing a bison. Could not live with myself afterwards, so a tag comes with me every time.

I guess this was a lesson I learned the hard way as well years ago. Went deer hunting, and there is an immature moose season in the area we were in. Guess what we see?? Two immature bull moose walking up the road towards us at less than 100m. NO MOOSE TAGs. We easily could have had 2 immature moose that day. That one was a hard lesson to learn, as unicorn moose are difficult to ever run into, and I think I've only done it 3 times in more than 25 years.

Oh, I have a general Mule deer tag, just not valid for the WMU. The only thing I can harvest in that WMU is a Whtietail buck. All my tags are general tags this year. I put all my draws in as priority only to build them up as this is my first year hunting. For me to use my general mule tag, I have to go almost up to the NWT or yukon. its not going to happen.

If this slob survives until next year, you better believe I will be putting in for a Mule Buck draw. My trail cams will be up watching for him next summer and fall.

Well done DB, I just read the whole thread, sounds like you are having fun out there!
I would suggest that your next purchase be a decent range finder, as estimating distance by eye is not the best, unless you have something like a powerline that you are sighting along.
BTW, with a 200 yard zero , you will be close to 8" low at 300, and shooting BOTH on an up or downward angle , you want to hold low.
Where did you hit your deer, and did you get an exit?n I'm guessing you had a high shoulder hit on it .

Makes sense.

I'm in BC, so the Alberta tag system is still somewhat of a mystery even though I have a bit of an idea of its workings.

Merry Chistmas to me! I had been watching this scope to go on sale for awhile now, and was super happy to see Cabela's put it in their boxing week sale.

Vortex 4-16x42 Diamondback HP is now on my Weatherby Vanguard S2 in 6.5 Creedmoor for hunting. Now to go out to the range to sight it in!
