Hello everyone, I'm still new to shooting. Have only been out a couple times with others and down in the states since i don't yet have my licence. However i thought i'd share my experience with the canadian licence system.

I attended a two day course that offered me the Restricted and Non-Restricted exams with a group called FAC (www.guns.to) and passed all the exams on december 15th. Once you pass an exam it must be mailed out to receive approval from the CFO and be sent back to you before you can send it off to the firearms center with your application. I received it back exactly one month later.

January 15th, i receive everything, get my paperwork in order stick it in a big envelope and send it expedited to Miramichi. It arrives on the 17th of January at their post office box. The application stays in limbo, not showing up online, but has been received, for about 3 weeks. It shows up on the website on February 8th. (yes I really did check every day!).

Taking the advice of this form, I called in last week (February 13th) to ask if i could do my interview right then and there. I was told that the application wasn't ready and i should try calling again next week. So I did just that. I called today (Feb 21st) and asked to do my interview. They happily did the interview with me and let me know that my references would be called eventually. So i called up my references and asked them to do the interview right away, They both had the time and called in. Both got to do the quick interview without any issues today as well.

So i checked online again just a few minutes ago (still AM of feb 21st) and sure enough the status had changed to this:
Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued.

So for you newbies out there, try to call in and do your interview it seems to really speed it up. I don't know how long this would have taken to do otherwise! I hope my story helps some other people just getting their licences!

I still can't believe that your test results have to be mailed to the CFO first and then back to you before you can send off your application. That kind of redundancy is retarded. You were basically forced to have an extra 28 day waiting period!

yea.. its a bit odd that they have to licence people to administer the exams, but then don't trust them enough to mark them...

but that being said, it's all done now.

Hey OP, that's basically my timeline as well, mine showed done this past Monday. In Mb the examiner marks your test on site and then gives you the results to mail in right away. You guys in ON sure have a lot of bizarre rules and extra hoops to jump thru.

With regard to interviews, I keep reading here about applicant interviews, reference interviews and spousal interviews. Yet I have never experienced any such things, nor has anyone that I know of. Just how prevalent are they? I haven't heard of anyone not getting a licence because of no interview...

My wife didn't have to do an interview, just the references. It would be a good idea to remind your references what they signed, one of mine was asked if he signed my application (I'm sure that is a standard question). He initially stated no as it had been about six weeks since he signed it and I guess he forgot. They allowed him to ammend his answer and continued the interview. Small error, but could have been huge PITA.

Yea, i feel like that would have been a very large issue for her.

I have a course with FAC in March. Looking forward to it, heard good things about Gerhard.
I didn't know you had to send in your test results to be approved first though. Good to know. I'm guessing this is why you fill out a self addressed envelope at the course?

Application Received on: 2012/12/21, Did my interview and references did theirs a few weeks ago and im still waiting for them to issue my license!!!

All restricted applications require interviews. For non-restricted, there is specific criteria for whether or not interviews will be conducted and it changes periodically.
