If he wasn't a member of CGN would I be creeped out? Most definitely. Does it change being a member here? Undecided still.

Some "internet pulls" of "bronies" taking pics of their/with their "girlfriends"...

THEY made this photos, others did not Photoshop them in to be funny, they are happy/proud of this.

REMEMBER this is a show for LITTLE girls, under age 10. I feel sick to my stomach...

and that is the mindset north americans need to get past if we're ever going to get better animated series and movies. this whole "they're for kids" mindset is killing the industry. We'll never get anything more than spongebob or fairly odd parents if viewers don't acknowledge that animation can be more than for wacky cartoons for kids. Look at what comes out of Japan, are those "cartoons" just for children? Is Ghost in the Shell for children? what about Speed Grapher? what about Welcome to the NHK? 5CM Per Second? Usagi Drop?

the difference between those shows and something like MLP is that in Japan animation has been accepted as an art form, a well accepted vehicle for storytelling while here in North America it's still, "Just a dumb cartoon for kids." I dont like MLP myself, but it's got a lot in common with anime that targets an adult audience. the only difference is the market has forced them to make it so bright and colorful and childish. To say you haven't smoked enough marijuana to even try and pay attention is simply offensive.

there will always be things that can only look amazing or even right in 2D animation. there are things you simply cant do with live action or even 3D animation. We'll never get to make or see those things if the "it's for children" mindset continues. Compare the dream sequence in Inception when decaprio's character is teaching the girl how dream worlds work, to any of the dream sequences in Paprika.

Back on topic: when i get a 1911 (or two as i want to keep one absolutely bare and classic) i want Totoro grips. To fit the style it'll probably be wood grips with the image carved into it

For some very odd reason this thread just won't die!? Evil_Edie; it was not my intent to offend you or anyone else for that matter. I was recalling my teen years, high as a kite watching the Uncle Bobby show (not animated but defiantly for kids) and thinking it was hilarious...did I ever watch Uncle Bobby when I wasn't high? Sure, but I was 6 years old and the show held my attention for very different reasons.
Look, If you enjoy cartoons (I'll still watch an old Bugs Bunny if it's on. No, not high and yet still funny and completely politically incorrect {my favorite parts}) and you're not hurting anyone, fill 'yer boots! Just don't ask me to understand, I don't. I really don't see the attraction to "Bronies"...Yosemite Sam on the other hand, now that's some funny stuff (I wonder if he could be made into grips?...hmmmm.)

but thats the problem, you didnt even read my response did you? its not about bronies or what not, it's about animation being limited due to a mindset. I understand that you don't want to watch i childish show or some old cartoon. but because of people like you running networks serious adult animated shows never make it. Could you imagine networks running an animated series along the lines of walking dead? game of thrones? i can because such a thing exists outside of western nations, but here despite every attempt those shows get shot down because they aren't "appropriate for children"

We are clearly not on the same wave length...and I don't run a network, but I am an adult, I understand how the medium of television makes money, and perhaps in these points I share some similarities to the mindset of network executives, however I doubt that these executives and myself share any other similarities. "They" are certainly not "like" me.

(I think most of them smoke pot. :))

Plinker, if you're a liberty minded person, maybe try watching the first 2-3 episodes of the show, the whole series is on Youtube.

Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't.

I've done a LOT of write ups in the My Little Pony thread in the Lounge, but long story short - it's a good show, with a good message. It's whimsical and stylish such that young girls can enjoy it, but with themes, tie-ins with pop and nerd culture (including some crazy ones, like Apocalypse Now, Escape from LA, Trainspotting, The A-Team, Star Trek, Star Wars, The Big Lebowski, etc.), plot and character development that 30 year old, ex (and serving) military guys can appreciate. Also the production studio (Hasbro) is well aware of the development and does a lot of tasteful and clever pandering to it.

Personally, I think the rise in the non-interventionist, liberty movement among young people accounts for the Brony meme going viral and the Brony community growing to epic proportions (easily in the millions).

The message between the two certainly is consistent.

The main message of the show fundamentally revolves around friendship as a powerful force that comes from inclusive, mutually voluntary and reciprocal relationships formed based on acceptance of individual's unique characteristics, preferences, behaviors, and beliefs - even and especially when they are seemingly completely incompatible.

I think a 1911 with Fluttershy grips is very much a metaphor for this very philosophy.

The concept of gun ownership as a closed society, only available to a select few who satisfy very specific criteria is nonsense. If the community of gun owners was comprised only of "manly men conservatives" I would completely empathize with the anti's. Nazi Germany actually had a thriving gun culture (for those who the government deemed suitable to own guns), and it was all to re-enforce a government serving stereotype that "real men" had to do macho things like target shoot and serve in the military.

If the shooting community was a community of individuals (men, women, AND especially children) who see shooting as a means to form meaningful relationships with other individuals, regardless of their personal characteristics, preferences, background, and beliefs - I think it would be VERY difficult to destroy and much more worthy of respect.

I haven't read this whole thread but this post made me go watch an episode. I must say I agree with what you have written here. Might not be manly to admit it but I shed a tear watching it as it highlights all the values that are alienated in our society as a result of popular culture and what not(this show would be the antithesis to gangster rap). I'll probably never be a 'brony' but I can see myself watching the series as a guilty pleasure if you will.

Don't get me wrong though...the 'brony' pics posted there are a bit disturbing...sort of like the Japanese and their anime girlfriends(look it up...saw it posted on like break.com or something)...only more along the beastiality lines...hints at a lot of social exclusion and ###ual frustration which I can see happening if you hold the values represented in the show and live in our society.

i know "you" dont run a network, but people like you do. Adults who simply don't see animation as anything more than for kids. and thats the only aspect in this regard that matters your opinion on broadcast. i dont care if you're completely different in any other aspect of your life, it's that one thing that's killing the industry slowly

Dunno exactly as it was picked at random from youtube. It had the character Discord(evil dragon like creature) in it returning to life from a statue and causing chaos.
You made a good choice, discord is a delightfully fun and charming villain, John Delancie preformed the role with a perfect balance of fun and menace, giving the show something that animated shows aimed at girls really needed, something it needed to break out of the stigma that girls cartoons were all about makeovers, sleepovers and singalongs, a legitimate, frightening villain

this thread has given me an idea, i figured i'd mention it here even though it's not specifically MLP nor is it limited to grips. I want to make myself a Totoro themed 1911.

i can see it now. carved wooden grips with the face of the smiling beast, then burned to darken the lines. a susuwatari engraved into the center of the grip safety, the blue and white totoro engraved on the right side of the slide just ahead of the ejection port. Last but not least the Ghibli Studio logo engraved on the left side, just ahead of the 1911A1 marking
