Last night at the indoor range I shot the range's little S&W .22 revolver.

WHAT A SWEETHEART!

It is an older small framed light little gun that was screaming for a small hand or a larger wooden grip to work with my big paws. But it shot like a champ with spot on placement and just enough kick to put a smile on my face compared to the previous Ruger semi that I'd shot in .22 that was just way to good at sucking up the kick.

Now I want one...... Next time back I'll have to find out which model it is. I know it's the small J frame and it's actually a prohibited version with a 4 inch barrel. Obviously as a new R-PAL holder I'm going to need to look at longer barrel options. I'm also limited by my hatred for silver coloured guns so it has to be an old vintage blued model. None of the new hoity-toity stainless versions for me.... :D
 
In looking around on the 'net I think the one the range has may be a 17. The guy there told me it was the smallest "frame" they made.

It actually fit very nicely other than nowhere for the pinky to rest. A new set of slightly extended custom grips would fix that small issue in a blink. Yes, it helps a lot to do a fair bit of wood working as one of my far too many hobbies... :D

EDIT- found pics of a couple of 6"barrel 17-2's. Now that's what a 22 DA revovler should look like. The new 617's barrels are just way too massive looking to suit the light and, dare I suggest it, "dainty" .22 bullets. And add the fact that I'm just not at all crazy about the silver look of the current stainless models and I guess it's time to be patient and shop for the old school blued and light looking versions.

I think S&W also made a Model 18 .22lr revolver with a 4" barrel. Yep, it'll be 12.6 prohib :mad:

Personally I don't mind the look of the 617. I own a 6 shot model. Yummm, shiny bits. :cool: (May have been a crow in a previous life. :p)

Model 17 is a great shooter lots seem to come up lately. The small frames are "J" frames like Mod 34 or the lightweight mod 43 all excellent shooters. I thought that earlier Govt. promises were going to get rid of our silly size and cal restrictions?---Ron
 
Not to change the thread but.....
I shot my father in-laws Browning Medalist .22 last week.
This was the first .22 pistol I had ever shot.
I was totally amazed at how different a handgun shoots over a rifle.
It has a totally different sound (more "BANG" than "pop") and the recoil is a lot more pronounced!!!
It was actually pretty cool!!
Now I'm studying for my my RPAL :D

I love my 17-3 that I bought on the EE. It's a pleasure to shoot with it's amazing DA and SA trigger pulls. A good cheap way to practice my draw from the holster and DA shooting as I carry a .454 Casull in the field.

Looking at some pictures and given the owner said it was a J frame then I'm going to go with your idea that it's a model 34.

So did the 34's only come with prohibited length barrels or was there a longer barrel version?

Although that 17 of geologist's is sure pretty looking.....

Misfire, I call those with a penchant for shiney stuff sufferers of SOS or Shiney Object Syndrome. And it sounds like you've got it bad.... :D
