Any pics yet of that 700P in sand?

I'm going to paint a desert pattern over it, this is to bland for me.

you sanded the bedliner? and primed over that? am I getting this right?

Yes, I sanded the bedliner smooth, then 3 coats of primer and 4 or 5 coats of textured paint. Make sure you mask the receiver area and any orifices.

do you really need the bedliner? Or can you go with just sanding and priming then painting?

Thinking of doing mine and was curious

I think I am going to do the bedliner thing too. I picked up a spare wood stock in the EE (at least I think I did - it is no longer listed and my EMT went through :p ) and I am going to try this technique. If I screw it up I can always turn to my original chicom stock ;)

The bedliner as far as I can read here adds a layer of resistance that the wood cannot offer. I am assuming the bedliner hardens into something a little more resilient than chu-wood?

As for the sanding, is it necessary? Does the bedliner not already provide a texture that ordinary primer and paint could cover? Or if I do not sand the bedliner, will the paint not adhere to it?

Or does the addition of textured paint give the stock even more protection?

Just did mine this weekend....followed the instructions to a tee and it came out better than anticipated!!

Mine is the green version of Rustoleum.....the stock is now much harder, and can fool anyone into thinking it is synthetic....it has both the look and the feel of one...and oddly makes the rifle seem lighter (purely psychological I know but still!).

Yes, I can attest that once it is dry it is a very durable finish.

Will post a pic as soon as I figure out how to....

Thanks Undergiver!

I'm glad it worked out for the guys who tried my method. When I originally did the stock I was just going to go with Truck bed liner but when it was finished it looked cheap, so I experimented with primer and textured paint. I sanded the truck bed liner because the surface was bumpy and rough, I think it would not turn out as good as it did if I did not sand the Truck bed liner. I swear it could pass for a Syn stock if the average person handled it.

I don't know if it's necessary, it's just the way I did mine, I think if I didn't the stock would be to rough.

I am wondering if I got the right bedliner? The stuff I got says "Duplicolor Truck Bed Coating"

http://www.duplicolor.com/products/truckbed.html

I painted it on expecting it to be textured, it just looks like black paint? No texture, not thick, nothing just black paint-like look.

I am testing it on a piece of scrap wood. How many coats did you put on?

I used the whole can on the stock, then I sanded it then primed it, then textured paint.

Sorry - newbie question: did you paint the barrel channel too? (i.e. is the receiver area basically the only unpainted part?)

Bet you didn't realize you'd become a CGN stock-finishing Guru when you posted ;)

I put on the second coat this morning on my test piece of scrap wood and now I am seeing more texture ;) I am going to try my wood stock as soon as I get it in the mail.

Can you post a closeup picture of the texture you got? :)
