I got many good suggestions here on everything I wanted to do on my Mosin, (Thank you)
I promised to put up some pictures. Progress was slow, life busy, and it toke me
quite a long time to set it up the way I wanted it, but there it is.

There was no permanent modifications made to the rifle, except refinishing the wood.

This is how it looks now.

The shellack was peeling off of the wood so I stripped it of did a light stain, and applied a few coats of varnish.

Some buttons of my camera stooped working so I could only shoot in auto mode, so I toke pictures with and without flash.

This is the Bass Stacker scope mount. It is rock solid and no need to do any permanent modifications.
Also the iron sights are still usable.

The rubber recoil pad really makes it an enjoyable rifle to shoot. Worth every penny. imho

The cheek rest is one of my projects.
I made it out of tooling leather, Molded it to the contour of the stock, and waterproofed with my secret waterproofing agent, that also gave it this nice color.

The scope is a cheap-o pistol scope. (Thank you Marstar)

I only refinished the stock because the peeling shellack, so while refinishing the stock I did not remove any markings or ding of the wood.

Right side of the Cheek rest.

The lacing on the cheek rest is just a piece of gutted paracord, but I will replace it with some leather cord as soon as I get around to buy some.

My wife say she doesn't like to look of the new finish. :)
What do you think? How did it turn out?
Any comments, complaints, compliments welcome.

The only thing I might do is duracoat all the metal parts. What do you think about that?

Thx for looking.

Well done!

I am really interested to see if the cheap scope actually holds up to the abuse of the 7.62x54R recoil....

I like the refinished wood, looks great.

I would NOT duracoat it!! My opinion only. ;) It will completely kill any collector value it has, and the original Russian finish is quite hardy!

Happy Hunting!

Cheers!

PS: That cheek rest is classy! Very nice!

That cheek rest looks pretty cool it goes nicely with the refinished wood.

Where did you get that mount I've herd it's very good but I've never seen any around?
Also if you ever feel like making more of those cheek rest pm me I'd buy one, they look awesome

Very nice old rifle! Good on you for not buggering up a fine old milsurp. As the posters above, I am interested in hearing about the scope mount. Years ago, I had a cheap pistol scope mounted on a Mauser, but it got stolen. It worked like a charm.

Please do not duracoat! If you must duracoat something, try it out on your wife's favorite set of pots, or maybe do your cars, but not the rifle.:)

Due to popular demand I decided to forgo duracoating it.

I ordered the scope mount from brass stackers website from down south,
it was $60 + $15 shipping.

It is not cheap, considering it is for a $150 rifle, but it requires no permanent modifications.

I think I posted a few close ups on it, I can snap some more pictures if you
tell me what what part would you see better.
Have you got any close up pics of the cheek rest ?

It is made out of vegetable tanned tooling leather.
Cut the pieces to size, moisten the leather, let it dry on the stock so it assumes
the shape, rinse and repeat.
After you have all your pieces, glue them together, let the glue cure, then do the stitching,
and finally finish the leather with your favorite leather finish.
I hope this helps.
If you are interested I can upload some pics of the process. Let me know.
Groverino That's awesome. More info on how you made that cheek rest would be appreciated.

I was very concerned about it as well.
I have about 100+ rounds trough it whit the scope on. The scope is still in one piece and works fine.
I can't tell much about the accuracy yet, because it was just shot standing with no support in the woods.
I didn't had the chance to shoot it at the range, and probably wont be able to do so until January. :(
I'll do a range report when I get to shoot it next time.

It takes some time to make one because of the drying times involved shaping-molding the tooling leather.
I wasn't planing to make another one, but I will send you a PM.
