Hey fellas i picked up this Marlin.

some good news is the rifle is good lookin feels godo an all that, oh it has a JM stamp on it.. spose im happy about that!?

had more oil on in an under it than my own personal oil tin, every screw was loose or close too.. (im guessing previous owner had 'accuracy issues')

the Trigger when uncocked moves a fair bit side to side... but is tight when cocked. (anyone else notice)

gun goes bang, shot 4 rounds before the mounts all loosened up again--- on the bright side the Scope is going to the .222 today

whats not good was the Mounts...... here you can see the threads are stripped

Also It came with this Rail, it looks to be "elevated" one end, it feels Cheap.... light material, maybe alll are, im a first timer with the Rail.... does it look to be a Cheapy or a standard?

So the Mounts---- Rekon i can put a fitting Bolt through , an a good nut and tighten enough? until i order the Correct pair of mounts? any tips here would be appreciated.

apart from this....... project gun looks the goods!

now to begin reloading the .222 with some 55gr vmax!

Hey i done some tinkering, looks like i should have a shootable rifle for now.
$2 from hardware store, shotty bolts but should work.
vx2 X50 on now too!

The rail appears to be the factory supplied one. It’s not heavy duty, but it woorks just fine from my experience using them. I usually swap them out for Talley one piece mounts. The base patterns are the same as the Winchester M70, although I don’t believe the spacing between front and rear is the same (no Winchester 1 piece rails)

The rings should be replaced anyways IMO, I’ve never been a fan of the round peg in the square hole kind of rings.

The action screws being loose are kind of odd, but the stock is pillar bedded so you should be able to torque them down (watch you don’t over tighten the rear action screw (plastic trigger guard), good reason to upgrade to a metal one.

The wobbly trigger sounds odd, maybe make sure the screws holding the trigger assembly to the action are tight.

Yo thanks mate.
breifly, how tight for the action screws? tighter on front by the sounds?

looking at trigger screwws now

I put the action in the stock, install both screws loosely, stand the rifle up on its buttstock then tighten down the front screw tight, no idea of the torque spec. Then tighten down the rear screw by “feel”. (Tighter with a metal guard)

That way the recoil lug should be properly seated against the stock

Yep gotcha, Thanks for your info an help this mornin mate!
will post up to how it shoots this arvo!

lightened the trigger while i was down there! cheering.

I like those X7s. Owned 4 over the years.

That scope rail is quite serviceable and actually works very well if mounting a short scope on a lone action. I used it on all of mine without a thought of swapping it out.

Sweet, good to hear that for sure especially from Ya, I too like this XL7! it fits my bill perfectly, an all the pieces are fine.... a good sturdy deer gunner!

Mine definitely prefers 150 grn over 180grn blue box

True mate? ive heard this a little bit too lately, lighter stuff doin a bit better than the heavies!
i didnt have 06 dies but im usin the 308 dies to get er done, couple more blue box shells to go then il put some serious stuff in it :D

Got to use up the box of Federal 180grains last night at a box 180m away, it seemed to put two close together and drop one a bit, might be me, alot of variables... not fussed as there is none left now LOL.

i was happy enough with the mount bolts, rail and scope doing the job at hand no worries and last night i loaded up 19 accubond 150 grain, 48gr Varget which should be similiar Velocity as the Federal 180gr......... give or take..alot. 180/2700 150/2800 .. i didnt want to work up a load for these 30 odd ABs i had left, this was 1 step up from Min in the "ADI" database, so shouldnt of had any pressure issues (unless coal was too long eh) but none the less, all fitted in Magazine and Chamber after using the 308 Win LEE FLS as a Neck sizer die, and 35 Whelen Seater to plant my AB. (will need a FLS 30-06 as i get a slight Ring down the base on side so maybe a little sloppy chamber/short fed brass who knows yet)

i made a new target, 100meters away , laid prone an used that sorta pretend accu trigger thingy and squeezed one off... 2.7 inches direct above bull.... clicked down 4 clicks.... now wheres the Deeeeer!!

The Trigger is helping me out a bit with technique, in two ways.. Squeezing the blade to allow trigger to break and also when spooking or point shooting game, i would of fired a shot the other night when i stalked up a steep face to some deer i glassed a mile back, near dark at the top an i couldnt find them, but Honk, an i see them try depart.. had her in the scope but as i "slapped" off a shot.... it did not fire.. she ran away.
perhaps better for me, but also the Deer eh....

Got a wet weekend ahead , will be in the Hut, hunting around an next weekend got the guru dude comin up for a weekend hunt so should get some action in coming weeks.

cheers~

edit* - to mention the 150gr in 06 is much nicer to shoot than 180s!

Sounds like you got'er dialed in, good hunting once the storm passes, have a safe weekend out there

indeed mate, Cheers, looking forward to some more weekend hunts!
got out last arvo and glassed up 4 Sambar on the hill, snuck up to them and shot A mature Hind of the group, letting the younger stag live another day!

so the 06 is blooded, going to Tan her hide aswell.

The first thing I did with my XL7 was fill the hollow stock with a tube of silicone. Got rid of that awful hollow"thuk" noise when knocked and added some needed weight to the back end. If you ever take the bolt apart do it in an empty room without carpetting! took me two hours with a magnet to find my ejector and spring. Why would I take apart the bolt on a brand new gun, you ask? Curiosity my friend, CURIOSITY!

ha ha! unlucky man!
i didnt think the stock sounded tooo bad! bette than the stevens lol an a bit better than an axis i rekon.. might tip a bit of silicone in one day though, it does have a ;thunk' to it but not too bad!

ive taken my sling studs out because old mate has put in the Bipod screw to the front with fine thread, so i can use a bipod but not a sling as the studs wont grip... might glue in another day but how i use it, without sling will be fine, carry, point shoot. this week on the farm land fringes i have attatched the bi pod anyway....

loven it, a x40 scope would feel a bit handier but im familiar with this particular x50 scope so just taken a couple weeks for it to become second nature again.

well well, Looks like this Marlin has a short throat on it!!

i wouldnt be suprised if my accubond loads are too close to the lands!!!
i stuck a woodleigh in backwards and chambered into the rifle, theres like 6mm of shank sticking out the case--- so ive seated some 150gr woodleighs under that figure and with some more powder than accubond trial load..
i was suprised to see so little throat!?

some google-ing later revealed, not uncommon for marlin to have a min throat
