or Folding?

I intend to gunkote/duracoat etc eventually.

(Comments about the messy workbench go without saying. I am stil going through the pains of moving in to a new place. The rifle is a little escape from all that.)

What are you going to do with it?

If it's a "target" gun, go fixed (montecarlo, whatever).

Go with the folder if it's a plinking/f'ing-around gun (because it's fun),
or if it is for backpacking (because of practical reasons).

My 2c.

I usualy don't make comments about the EE forums,
but I remember seeing a while back
a brand new folder like that (the stock only)
for 900 bux. I think it was a typo or sumpin.

Mini-14.....

Ill be practical....

The 'FOLDERs' are an older breed of the mini-14 and have BAD twist rates on the barrels....

So, possibly get a new gun and an old folding stock & combine them. Then you have the best of both worlds.

I am a fan of the factory folding stocks.. not the after market plastic jobies!

First off the original factory Mini-14 folder hasn't been made in years. It's considered a collectors item now and sometimes sell for way more that they are really worth...and it's not that comfortable to shoot. Now for the important part, folding stocks for Mini-14's and other rifles (not including shotguns) are banned from export from the USA to Canada. So if you don't find a used one or really old inventory at a store you are SOL. Phil.

about the only thing that's more rare than the factory folder is the gp, or whatever it's called- the one that takes the m7 series bayonet- if you go after market folder you can have both ways, although i've got a herd of "folders" and there isn't one that can beat a straight stock into action- the only real reason for a folder is space constraints, but i'm not into"cool"

I say buy a second mini and have two: one folder, one fixed. Mine is an after market folder right now and I enjoy. I find it comfortable to shoot and I group decent with it with irons and offhand.

I prefer the fixed stocks as they are more solid.

I would personally go for the M14 look (flash hider, 5/30 round mag, fixed stock), which is what I'm planning to do when I get my hands on one.

I'm a fan of fixed stocks also. Folders look funny and are often uncomfortable. Whatever you do, please don't put an AR collapsible stock on it though. Contrary to popular opinion, they really don't look good on everything!

I say folder. I had aButler Creek folder (from P and D) on mine and I loved it rock solid and nicer to shoot. It also makes it a lot easier to throw into the truck.

I like the weight and LOP of the folder better. It just feels handy. And I find the shorter LOP nice. In fact I find it very comfortable to shoot, and from any position. But I really like hogue stocks. I love how the trigger sets up in it. And a lighter rifle would be nicer to have lugging around somewhere.

I have the distinct impression I will need another mini 14 for my other stock!

Thanks for your input!

Factory Folder version, they kickass. Be prepared to pay an Arm and half a leg however, somewhere around 11-1200 for a good one.

Its true that they have bad twist rate however and spagetti barrel.
