Well, seeing as I've already had an exceptional year with 3 bucks down of the 4 our party got I've been getting picky. I figured there was no reason to shoot another buck unless he was a real trophy. I passed on a nice little 7 point last night at less than 20 yards hoping the big 8 I had on camera would show. Either way I've been hunting that stand pretty hard so I met up with my dad to try a hunt on another property where we hadn't seen much action this season. It's muzzleloader week here and despite my thoughts that I'd like to carry something traditional, I went with my old faithful and carried my Savage ML II smokeless muzzleloader, loaded with 42 gr or 4759 and a 250gr Hornady XTP hollowpoint and MMP black sabot. I set up on one end of the property and my dad started walking once it was light out. This big guy winded him, and he saw him on a dead run at about 250 yards. Less than 30 seconds later he'd covered the best part of a 100 acre farm and ran down the field in front of me at 100-125 yards. I stopped him with 2 loud grunts from my call and made what I thought was a poor shot on his right shoulder. He hopped on 3 legs into the swamp and I was a little concerned I may have screwed up on one of the biggest bucks I'd ever seen. We let him stiffen up for a while and 45 minutes later, I followed his tracks into the swamp with not a single drop of blood anywhere. As it turns out he was stone dead less than 50 feet from where I'd shot him. The bullet entered in front of his right shoulder, breaking the shoulder, ribs, then lungs before coming to rest on the opposite side just under the skin. This is by far the biggest whitetail I've ever seen in Southern Ontario. Field dressed and weighed at 200 lbs, 15 points with one tine essentially broken off. Sorry for the poor quality pics, I'll try to post better ones tomorrow.
