So I thought I would take off for the weekend on my own and headed up to the Lilooet River valley in BC to see about some Blacktail bucks.
such and amazing scenic place to hunt but the terrain is not forgiving .
so I loaded the truck up late Friday night and off I went for the 3 1/2 hour drive. Arriving at 3:30 in the morning, I grabbed a pillow and crashed out. At 5:15, I made a quick coffee and hit the trail up to "my rock", a spot I sit every time I hunt there.

At 8:00 the first deer of the day came down the game trails and right by my shooting spot. As buck 1 stepped past the big tree some 30 yards below me, my shot took him just behind the elbow and down he went. I didn't see where buck 2 went and after a brief pause and good scan for him, I stood up and chambered another round. The sound of the action, or me standing up , flushed deer 2 who was still there and back up the hill he went. I let out a whistle and he briefly paused and presented a good shot. I didn't hesitate ;)
5 hours of brutally hard work later, I got both bucks back to the truck. BIG thanx to a stranger I met named Peter (from Prince George) who gave a tired, broken 46 year old a hand for the last 100 yards LOL
Came home with 2 nice meat bucks and a broken middle finger (don't ask) and I'm sitting back relaxing with a stiff drink and thanking heaven I quit smoking almost 2 years ago or I would have surely had a heart attack yesterday on that mountain side LOL
gawd I love hunting
Good luck to everyone this season, get out there and enjoy it !

Very nice! Pretty little bucks... Ruger M77 Standard, chambered for what cartridge?

well thanx ;)
It's a 7mm rem mag. a little bit much gun for those deer but last week in the same spot instead of deer it was a bear standing at 30 yards right where I shot buck 1 this weekend..... so I brought the 7 instead of the rifle I usually would take.... not that a .303 brit wouldn't kill a blackie but he was kinda big hehehe

I have to ask.

How'd you break the finger? :)

ya I didn't figure I'd get away with leaving that out. haha
I had used lashing straps wrapped across the anlters to form a good handle for the drag.
the smaller antlered deer took a roll and my hand , got caught up in the lashing as the deer took a few rolls down hill. the middle finger took the worst, right below the middle knuckle. it's very steep there, you don't try and hang on when they start rolling like that.... rookie mistake, but it all ended well enough LOL

It seems the middle finger finds its way into some of the tightest, and most dangerous, areas for many people...

If im not mistaken aren't you only allowed 1 mule buck in region 3 which includes Lillooet and another buck in a different region?

you are not mistaken, region 3 regs are 2(1) , 2 deer, only 1 can be a buck, the other a doe by limited entry. I hunt region 3 for big mulies in November.
but where I was hunting is firmly within the confines of region 2 , otherwise.... I'd be a total moron to kill 2 bucks and post about it on the internet hehehehe

Oh okay, my bad, I didn't know it was region 2 you were talking about when Lillooet River Valley was mentioned.

it's okay, I have had a few guys, even the butcher , who kinda looked at me funny when I told them both deer were mine hehehe
as for the lilooet valley... I was being very vague ;)
it's only the second time in the 15 years I've hunted there that I've been fortunate enough to fill both tags in one trip.
