So I thought I would take off for the weekend on my own and headed up to the Lilooet River valley in BC to see about some Blacktail bucks.
such and amazing scenic place to hunt but the terrain is not forgiving .
so I loaded the truck up late Friday night and off I went for the 3 1/2 hour drive. Arriving at 3:30 in the morning, I grabbed a pillow and crashed out. At 5:15, I made a quick coffee and hit the trail up to "my rock", a spot I sit every time I hunt there.
At 8:00 the first deer of the day came down the game trails and right by my shooting spot. As buck 1 stepped past the big tree some 30 yards below me, my shot took him just behind the elbow and down he went. I didn't see where buck 2 went and after a brief pause and good scan for him, I stood up and chambered another round. The sound of the action, or me standing up , flushed deer 2 who was still there and back up the hill he went. I let out a whistle and he briefly paused and presented a good shot. I didn't hesitate
5 hours of brutally hard work later, I got both bucks back to the truck. BIG thanx to a stranger I met named Peter (from Prince George) who gave a tired, broken 46 year old a hand for the last 100 yards LOL
Came home with 2 nice meat bucks and a broken middle finger (don't ask) and I'm sitting back relaxing with a stiff drink and thanking heaven I quit smoking almost 2 years ago or I would have surely had a heart attack yesterday on that mountain side LOL
gawd I love hunting
Good luck to everyone this season, get out there and enjoy it !
