P.S. the discussion has been good, but took a quick turn into "Reloading" territory, and we are no longer talking about the gun (appropriate for the Hunting forum) but the loads. Once I have it all figured out, I'll post a ditty over in that forum.

Call me sick, but I think that the gun pictured at top is beautiful in a crude, brutish sort of way. Ugly maybe, but uglier still at the business end.

Perfect! Off the the equipment exchange I go to find pics of sporteres Mosins, Enfields and SKS carbines. Never met a bubba of any of those that I could warm up to...

38-55 got it from Dave Henry at Hanna Gun show.Buttstock from Robert Wilson .Just have to build a forestock.
