I want to make my Stag AR with a 16" barrel look like this one here. Is this guy running a 9" railed handguard? If so, can I just buy one and mount it after taking off my front sight?

I am looking to mount a Harris bipod and a vertical foregrip with flip up irons on the front and back. Can I mount the front iron right on top of the railed forearm or do I need an extra piece?

Lastly, as I want my Ar to look like the one in the picture, what should I do for a scope. I am looking for a variable power scope because alot of my shooting is done at ranges from 25-50 yards at Burlington. I dont really want to spend more than $300CDN. I have heard the Bushnell is a great scope but I dont know anything about which model is good or whatever.

Please help, the answers may be right there but I cant find them!!

To mount a Harris you'll need a rail adapter with sling stud. I have a KAC, but YHM also makes one, which IIRC Wolverine carries.

How would I go about mounting it?

Also I see that Arms East has them for $355.00CDN. Anyone know if these Samson ones are good or if there is anything else out there (maybe cheaper and better?!?)

With the Troy rail in your pictures you keep the old barrel but (I used a Larue in this)

you can alo use a dremel to transform you actual gas block in a low profile one its a simple mod done by a lot of pepole

I've come to believe that unless you are a craftsman or one at heart the easiest thing to do is cut down the front post. You've are already going to have to buba the rifle to some degree to put the rail on so to me cutting down the post doesn't seem any worse. IMO there is less things to go wrong when you cut down/grind down the front post, it's something that I or an untrained monkey's can do but to dismantle the entire front site and gas tube requires some skill or at least the training of your monkey.;)

My vote goes to what hoodie did, I think it's a solid plan and I've decided I'm going to copy it.:dancingbanana:

which railed foreend should I get if I dont want to replace with low profile gas blocks, etc.

I just want to install and not have to replace parts. If I install the samson rail from arms east am I going to have to do all of this stuff?

I just also looked over that thread about Hoddie's middy 16". Sounds like I am getting myself in over my head here, or am I?

All I want is a 12"rail with a bipod and a vert grip but I am a newb to AR's so I am not sure what it is I ask for maybe?

I then want to mount a variable power scope and buis on top.

Your not going to be able to get a 12'' rail on a 16'' barrel without doing something to the gas block, its not that hard to see that it won't work.

http://www.armseast.com/images/MRFS_M_EX2.jpg - You can get something like that from ArmsEast that goes around the front sight, but then you'd have no need for a flip up front and rear.

Kinda like THIS one - it's the 'EBR' version of the above one... it required filing off the bayo lug and swivel, but in my opinion having a FIXED front sight is far more secure than a low-pro gas block and flip up front iron...

What about optics?

I like Hoddie's idea, that way I can fit the 12" samson rail (the one I want) and his looks ####ing sweet.

I wanna run a variable power optic though under $300 preferably

Okay I was looking at different rails on ar15.com and I found these Yankee Hill Machine 12" free float forearms for cheap

http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/YHM-...ee-Float-Rifle-Length-p/yhm-9636 rifle ff.htm

http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Troy-Ind-Tactical-Free-Float-Rifle-Length-p/troy mrf r16.htm

Are these the same as the Samson rails that cost $355 at Arms East?
What justifies the cost difference?

I just simply dont know? But usually there is a good reason for price differences........I just dont want to spend money I dont need to.

What justifies the difference in price between a Norinco AR and a Colt? :)

You get what you pay for. I have the Samson set up, and it is a VERY nice piece of kit. That being said, I'm sure it 'does the same thing' as the YHM setup, especially since we're civvies and not doing any two-way range work.

My AR is now close to $2500 total build cost. Is it 'better' than some? Yes. Does it 'do the same thing' as a cheaper one?... yes.

End result - spend the money if you want to, not because you NEED to! :)

So from what you are saying there is no difference? I was worried one was one piece and the other was two. Or one aluminum and the other plastic.

I understand that you get what you pay for but I am talking about basic setup and construction.

I tried to save on a forearm once, bought FOBUS and got a hard plastic forearm for 130 bucks. I would have preferred to spend more in this case but I didnt know the difference.

Between these two there is no difference?

There are differences in quality, I'm sure. However, the YHM one is aluminum as well. What grade? No idea. Not sure if it's two piece though...

Check out ar15.com for reviews on the YHM stuff.

The Troy and Samson are 'almost' the same. Samson used to make the Troy stuff in their shop, and then a split occurred and Samson started making stuff like the Troy and branding it as their own. There are posts about it on AR15.com

Either way, I talked to Scott Samson personally about his stuff, and he was very informative and helpful. Like I said, it's a very nice piece of kit!
