I just got a Savage model 11 in .308 winchester. I put a Bushnell Trophy 3-9X40 with the mil dot reticle on it (I love mildots). It's got the removable mag, synthetic stock & it's the blued model, as I couldn't find a .308 or 30-06 Savage in Calgary today with the stainless steel at ANY of the stores I checked out (about 6 of em). It even comes with the accutrigger, which I fell in love with when I paid close attention to it in the store.

All told, including an aftermarket recoil pad (and another for my ol .303) and a box of 180 grain Federals, the bill came to UNDER $700! WOOO!!!

Tomorrow afternoon, I sight my new baby in.

THANK YOU ALL who offered your opinions on Savages & their pros & cons. I think she looks downright pretty. :)

Congrats on your new rifle... ;)

What are you shooting with those 180 grain bullets? Seems a tad heavy for .308... you might want to try some 150's & 165's to see if they don't shoot better in your new rifle.
 
lol, they're what I'm used to with my other rifle... I'll be shooting mulies this year & I'm hoping for elk and/or moose next year.

My project rifle was made on a Savage 116, It has a 1.15'x26' barrel with a holland style flash suppressor, and a nice stock from sharpshootersupply.com which i recommend you check out.
 
I'm hoping this works...

This is where I got it sighted in by the 3rd shot... SWEET!!! I took another 4 shots before it got too dark to shoot safely. Doing the whole cleaning thing between, as they have marked out on the Savage website for breaking in the barrel & all that.

I'm VERY happy with my new baby. I think she has a nice tactical look too ;-)

Nice choice on cartridge for a fine shooting rifle. In retrospect, I should've gone with the .308 instead of the .30-06 myself, but the testosterone in me just couldn't comprehend giving up a few fps and ft-lbs of power :redface:

What do you think of the accu-trigger now that you've fired off a few rounds? (Mine is sans-accu)
 
While I'm a devoted 180 gr fan, you'd likely be served better by a 165 Accubond/TSX/NPT/et al in your 308. They just don't have the powder capacity to drive the 180s to the velocities that you'll be wanting for hunting in that open country. Plus the 165 premiums are plenty sufficient for elk and moose, provided good shot placement and a sensible range.
 
I was tempted by the 30-06, but I figured that would make my shoulder more tender too...

As for the accutrigger. Now that I've tried it a few times, DAYUM that's NICE!!! :D:D:D

I figure if I try the 3 boxes of 180's I got (my BIL got a couple more from my sis' work... She gets a discount so they're $10 per box YAY!!) just for practice & sighting in at the 100 yard mark... The 165 I'm guessing will be about the same at that range, then I can extend to see how far I can shoot accurately out on this open prairie... The place my BIL got the ammo... Only had the 2 boxes of 180s left, hence why he grabbed them.

lol, that or I could seriously build up a bit of a stockpile so I'm not likely to run out any time soon too. ;-)

I suspect that a few boxes, no problem. But buying em by the case & someone at my sis' work (where she gets a discount) could start to get curious...

I'd rather not abuse the opportunity, to be honest.
