Hey guy's

I just got a new dog today and thought I would share her with you folks. She's a 13 month female Yellow Lab Retriever and is a sweetheart.

My buddy has two of them both sisters and he has a baby due in two weeks so he gave me one.

She has basically been around a french speaking enviroment but with some english speaking people. But knows some english commands. I can already keep her off her leash and she runs around and comes back to me, fetches etc.

I am wanting to train her to be a hunting dog mainly for grouse etc.

Would anyone happen to have any advice or links they could give me so I can research. She has been around a 12 gauge before so that is a good thing and I will work on that but probably start out with my .22LR and work up from that being that I am a new person.

Also another thing.... her being almost 13 months old "in 2 weeks" is it still possible to change her name? Because I don't like it. Belle "Beautiful in french"

And if that is possible. Can anyone think of any names that kinda sound like that, that are cool. Like hunting dog names.

Here's a picture of her =)

Nice dog, but it looks like a yellow lab to me. Goldens have longer, reddish hair.

I've been wrong before. :)

.

your correct  it's been a long day and knew that, was just talking about golden labs with a buddy on the phone and got mixed up when I typed it out.

She's a nice dog though.

Is it still fully possible to train her at 13 months?

Oh ya, you can train a dog to have a new name if you want, can pretty much do it at any age, jsut have to condition her.

Nice!! I have the same thing and she's just turned three. First Lab I've ever had and thry're a great dog. Smart as a whip and not a mean bone in her body. I'm sure you'll enjoy her as I do mine.

Right on,

I figured I could do that but as I said, her owners we're french, but can speak good english but only do when there are english only speaking people around.

I can't wait for spring now :D I've alway's wanted a lab. I can't wait to whip sticks into the lake and let her bring em back "all my other past dogs were my parents and for the most part they were all miniture shelties" basically... whimps when it comes to water.

If anyone lives near me "Kirkland Lake area" and has experience with training dogs and would be interested in working with me next year or could give me some tips I would greatly appreciate it :)

Now come on guy's... what are so good names ...Belle doesn't cut it for me lol.

Gun names are cool. I like the name Remmy, but she's a female.. so I dunno, I am stumped.
Ideas?

Most dogs can learn, they just don't because they've figured out their owners. She's in a new environment, this is the best time to train her in fact. If you want to change her name, do it now. Likewise with any commands and acclimatization. Just remember, keep it the same, and lots of positive reinforcement! (as a yellow lab I'm guessing she's incredibly food oriented, use this to your benefit, or anything else she enjoys/likes)

She definitely looks smart and eager. Congrats on a great dog! I'm sure you'll share a lot of good times wandering about together.

Thanks :)

She definately is eager and full of energy when I let her outside, yet nice and calm inside. house trained, lets you know when she needs to go. Love the dog already and I've only had her for maybe 6 hours now lol.

What do you mean by incredibly food oriented?

And I REALLY need some name suggestions because I would like to pick a good one and start using it right away. hmm, maybe I should start a new thread for that?

Thank you all :)

Food oriented in the sense that the only thing that matters is food. All dogs are like that, but some more than others. They really only love you because you give them food sometimes, hahaha.
Can't tihnk of any really great names for a girl.

Ya I hear you there :)

I named her Brandy :) and so far she's starting to react to it!

I took her out to do her thing an hour ago with the wind blowing and snow dumping down and she would boot around but never go further then 20 feet from me and stop and wait for me to catch up to her. She's a great dog! And I have only had her for 6 hours now and she's warming up to me very well.

I am sure she will get depressed come tomorrow realizing that she's not falling asleep beside her sister. But her sister is not far from me and they will see each other often.

I would really like to find some info on how I can go about training her to hunt with me for grouse and now that I have a retriever, ducks!

Please if anyone could help me out and give me some links to read dealing with this or first hand experience it would be greatly appreciated!

Is it possible to start training her next spring and have her ready for the fall of 08?

Awesome :)

Feel free to post a picture of her in my thread. Did you train her to hunt? maybe you could give me some tips!
I see you're having fun coming up with a name. My wife & I had similar difficulties so our daughter was the one that came up with a name for her. Tikka. At first I thought perhaps our daughter had purchased a new rifle. Anyway, we liked the name and it stuck.
I'd post a picture of her but that isn't a skill/procedure that I've 'mastered' yet. Anyday now.
I had planned to do some hunting with her and had started working with her on upland birds. In the backyard, working with a wing, once shes calmed down a bit, I've found she'll actually go on point. I haven't worked too much with her yet as she was a pretty sick little dog early on. She had or still has cryptococcosis but that's another story. She appears to have it in remission and is healthy at the moment so I'll start working with her again.
I'll PM you and see if I can send pictures of her.

Sounds good John!

I sent you my email address in reply :)
Also PM me with any little tricks you did for yours in order to bring your kills back. I haven't the slightest clue as to how to train her and hopefully can get some advice on here!

Well the first night was great!

She slept beside me in my bed and that was that until I got out of bed then she wanted to go out. We went for a long walk in the snow. She spotted and tried to get two mice lol it was funny. I think she will be a good Grouse dog for sure :)

I tried throwing her a stick but the snow is to deep here and it would vanish under the snow when it landed and she couldn't find it lol.

God their awesome dog's, so smart.
:)

Thanks RePete :)

It was funny, you should have seen her and I walking down the trail. She will only go maybe 30ft tops ahead of me and stop and wait for me to catch up to her every time.

But when we were walkin, as I said she spotted a field mouse, she was ahead of me and she stopped with her tail up and was sniffin then darted into the snow up to her head chasing the little bugger in the snow but lost it because it had made a tiny tunnel. It was a mouse because I saw the dinky tracks lol.

Then on the way back she stopped at the exact same spot sniffin and checking it out. At first I thought maybe she was smelling a Grouse and got me excited lol.

Ah, we're gonna have lot's of fun for sure!

I will post more picture's of her in do time :)
