Good morning, afternoon, or evening, ladies and gents.

So, I finally caved in and bought an SKS from Wholesale Sports now that some other priorities (furnishing a house, replacing my computer, etc etc) are out of the way. I'm funny that way.

I'm not labouring under the illusion that I found a pot-of-gold or even
+any contribution to my retirement savings. But, when I got it home and started researching, I started to think that I might have happened up on one in terms of "closer-to-original-than-others".

I've stripped it down to decrapify it and oil. Other than the nicely blued bayonet, I find no indications that it's undergone any significant revisions or refurbishments.

It's a three-digit-serial-number Izzy from 1953

-there are no marks on it that would confirm that it had been refurbished
-all serial numbers match, with none ###X'd out. All are stamped except for those parts which are known to be normally penciled in.
-inside the stock, which is hardwood, there is a matching serial number handwritten and obviously decades old and the stock has never been repaired so far as I can tell.
-the stock does have one of those brass-wire screws that we see on every Lee Enfield, across it's width, just below the groove on the fore-end.
-the stock bears legible, if faded, inspection marks, including two, possibly three, cartouches at the cross-bolt.
-the stock has only one line of text- that being the serial number.
-the crown is bare metal
-the bolt and carrier are also bare metal with no signs of ever having been blued or painted
-barrel and receiver are nicely blued with a few signs of wearmarks

I know that if I looked around I could find some really like-new ones, but I didn't want to put out that kind of money. So the thought that I could have picked up something good on a "random drop", for the price that I paid, strikes me as pretty cool. I will say that if this was refurbished beyond the obvious, I think they did a pretty good job of it.

What say, you, Red Rifle Gurus? I think I at least got my money's worth.

Looks lightly refurbed and is a good find! A non-refurb has crisp cartouches around the cross bolt and a cartouche on the opposite side of the stock than the serial number.

There is a cartouche where you say. Looks like a numeric 10 with a line through it.

I thought that the black bayo was a sure sign of refurbishment. Oh well! you'll have to give it the real test now....fire it. Let us know how that works out.

Oh oh, somebody caught the bug! Very nice find. Would be nice if its got the Izevsk marking on the left stock, looks like its been sanded? All in all it looks like a great find!

Congrats on the purchase.. I wouldn't consider you "caved in" as much as I would say you "woke up". Every firearm owner should have 1 or 2 sks, just simply because you can't go wrong for the $.
I don't think you could have made a better or interesting rifle selection, considering where you made your purchase from. Give yourself a small pat on the back.

The blued bayo is a sure sign of refurb,,but yours could be very lightly refurbed. Looks great! And the 53 Izzy is one of the least common ones!

Any chance that you can get some close up pics posted?

It sounds like I have pretty much what I thought.

Close-up pics are very doable once I get it back together. Any part in particular that you want to see?

I've been toying with the idea of debluing the bayonet, just to bring it back closer to what it would have looked like in its heyday.

Its a desireable gun in its original refurb state. Dont mess with it, maybe buy another one to play with.

Yes these ones from wholesale are in excellent condition, from the earlier unmarked Ukrainian imports not the latest BBQ Molot export marked ones. I got 5 of them.

Nice looking rifle for sure. Would be nice to add an Izzy to the collection but alas other firearms projects have come up. Unless you consider a Norc cqa any bit red it's been close to two years since I've added anything new to my red rifle herd. The reds still get my love and attention on a regular basis at the range so they're still #1 in my heart. Enjoy you're rifle.

Curiosity, what number does it have stamped on the front of the front sight? It should have a 1-4 rating of accuracy from its original arsenal.

There is no number, nor any hint of there having been one, from what i can see- even from macro-photos I've taken of it.
