Hey Guys,

I got a 870 express in a trade. Came with a 28" vent rib barrel and standard synthetic furniture.

I just got a 20" rifled barrel w/ rifle sights and the Remington ShurShot stock kit.

Also picked up a couple diff boxes of slugs to try.

What brand of sabots work best for you folks? And anyone using rack masters or challengers? They are much cheaper!

Do you guys sight in at 50 or 100 yards? This is my first slug gun.

Thanks!

Mike

It really depends on the area you will be hunting, if the shots will be within knife throwing range to 75 yards - use the full diameter slugs that are made for rifled barrels like the Rackmaster or Challengers, they have great accuracy with a rifled barrel. Beyond that range the problem is they are dropping about 10" for every 25 yards traveled.

Sabot slugs shoot flatter and will add another 50 yards or so to your range, I use Remington Accutips in my 870 Express. Sabot slugs are more expensive by contrast than regular slugs; I used 2 boxes to sight in and check groups and then bought 4 more boxes which will do me at least the next five years, running about $20 a year for slug hunting ammo.

In the big picture ammunition is one of the small costs of hunting compared to fuel, travel, food, time off work, beer, lodging and so on.

Yea I bought a box of 2 3/4" rack masters and a box of 3" federal vital shok Barnes expander tipped sabots.

Going to see if I can get to the range on the weekend to test them out.

I hear good things about the Remington acu-tips as well.
